For a story to be good it needs to be a person in its own way. This story is doesn't meet the mark. There is no wit, no humor, no character. it just doesn't step out of the page, so to speak. It does not bring the characters to life or come to life itself. I'm trying to find a way to describe this gray, bland, waste of time. The narrator was okay, and nothing else was. Okay, I mean. Buy a different book.

There is nothing like a well written, well narrated romance. Nothing. When I find one I listen to it over and over again. If this audiobook was in paper format (and it probably is), my copy would be dog-eared, with pages falling out from over-use. This well-researched historical romance goes places romances don't usually go, like the American Revolutionary War, and uh other places too. The heroine is a Yankee spy and there's some of the harsh reality of what that entails thrown in, so be advised. The hero starts out as something of a bad guy, but then comes around to become one of my favorite heroes ever. If I say too much more I will be revealing too much of the plot. I'll just add that I have both read and listened to a lot of romances, and this one is on my short list of truly great ones. Author Donna Thorland has a trailer for this book on her website that is worth looking at. She is a Hollywood screenplay writer, so a trailer makes sense. This is her first book but it sure doesn't read like she's a newby, because she isn't. As I said the book is well-narrated.That doesn't mean that this is my favorite narrator, but she's very good. To summarize: great book, great writing, great heroine, and a hero to die for. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

Okay, I'm a fussy reader. That said, this is an entertaining book. It combines a troubled hero with a harsh backstory, a very sweet heroine, and tops it off with the most delightful group of secondary characters I've ever seen. The story has enough twists and turns to keep it unpredictable and fun. The writer obviously knows what she's doing. The narrator is Angela Dawes, and she does try. She's just not my cup of tea. When a novel is set in some place other than the US (where I reside), I do prefer a narrator that can handle the accents. There are plenty of narrators who can, but this one can't. Her Scottish accent needs work, and her English accent isn't any one of the broad spectrum of English accents I've ever heard. Bless her heart, she's probably a nice person. Sorry Angela.
