Historia
On a stifling summer day, an old Chevy Impala ignored the warning signals and was annihilated by the oncoming train. What no one realized until much later was that the driver had paused just before entering the tracks and kicked a small boy out of the car. A small boy with broken glasses who is clutching a notebook with all his might...but who never speaks.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 11-13-23
I purchased this book during #shortyseptember but finally listened to it this weekend. Other than a few chapters where my interest faded, this story was very powerful. I enjoy historical fiction, especially when it brings attention to an important but often overlooked event. (Though I was perturbed at a brief mention of "no slavery" in Germany. Germany was very involved in the slave trade, as were most European countries at that time.) I knew almost nothing of the crossing at Ebenezer Creek. Such a horrific tragedy. I just need to sit in silence for a while.

Historia
On September 11, 2001, Joe Maio went to work in the north tower of the World Trade Center. He never returned, leaving behind a wife, Sharri, and 15-month old son, Devon. Five years later, Sharri remarried, and Devon welcomed a new dad into his life. For thousands, the whole country really, 9/11 is a day of grief. For Adam and Sharri Maio Schefter and their family it’s not just a day of grief, but also hope. This is a story of 9/11, but it’s also the story of 9/12 and all the days after. Life moved on. Pieces were picked up. New dreams were dreamed. The Schefters are the embodiment of that.

Powerful memoir
Revisado: 11-02-23
Unlike many other listeners, I was completely unfamiliar with the author/narrator. I chose this book because I enjoy memoirs, and the idea of one linked with 9/11 caught my eye.
While the narration felt forced at times, the content was remarkable. I might have enjoyed it more in print. I was especially touched by how much the author continues to honor his wife's first husband. His love for her, her son, and even her (previous) in-laws is beautifully expressed throughout the story.
As some memories of 9/11 were shared, I became tearful. How could I not?
I listened to the book in a single day with a few breaks to stop and remember that day.

Learn about the five thresholds of postmodern conversion; how to open a conversation about faith and belief; how to ask thought-provoking questions and establish an atmosphere of trust, when to tell the great story of Jesus; how to help someone respond to God's call to intentional discipleship; and much more. And be prepared for conversion because when life at the parish level changes, the life of the whole Church will change.

I had this playing in the background while I was crafting. I nearly turned it off because the characters were so annoying in the beginning. I decided it was short enough I would just finish. there was a dramatic twist in the plot made way which kept me engaged. but I was frustrated at the ending. I am very glad that I did not invest a lot of time in it and it was free. No biggie.

Through beautiful prose and inspiring meditations, Caryll Houselander depicts the intimately human side of Mary, Mother of God, as an empty reed waiting for God's music to be played through her. Lovingly bringing Our Lady down off her time-honored, ancient pedestal, Houselander shares her insightful and beautiful vision of Mary on earth, Mary among us, Mary as a confused but trusting teenager whose holiness flowered with her eternal "Yes".

Excellent book, mediocre narrator
Revisado: 01-02-23
I have read this book before (hardcover) but wanted to listen to it during the Octave of Christmas. I still love the content, but the narrator's voice was a bit too "sweet" for me. I will stick with the print version next time I read it. (It's well worth reading again and again.)

Historia
During the first three decades of the 20th century, eugenics, the scientific control of human breeding, was a popular cause within enlightened and progressive segments of the English-speaking world. This prophetic volume counters the intellectual nihilism of Nietzsche, while simultaneously rebuking Western notions of progress - biological or otherwise. Chesterton expands his criticism of eugenics into what he calls "a more general criticism of the modern craze for scientific officialism and strict social organization."

Remarkably relevant
Revisado: 12-21-22
It always takes me a while to absorb any GKC writings. He was brilliant and witty, but his style of writing is very different than most of today's writers. I appreciate his sharp criticism of eugenics and socialism. This book was published in 1922 when eugenics was popular and promoted by many elites, but before Hitler's widespread practice of the philosophy.
While the book is 100 years old, it remains relevant.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Captivating, heart wrenching, beautiful
Revisado: 12-14-22
I was drawn in immediately by the characters. Having the story narrated by "Death" added a unique perspective. Many times, the author "gave away" some endings before filling in details. I wasn't sure if I would like that, but in this novel it works.

Historia
We live in an age characterized by agitation and lack of peace. What must we do to overcome the moments of fear and distress which assail us? This is what is taught in this simple, yet profound little treatise on peace of head. Taking concrete examples from our everyday life, the author invites us to respond in a gospel fashion to the upsetting situations we must all confront. Since peace of heart is a pure gift of God, it is something we should seek, pursue, and ask him for without cease. This book is here to help us in that pursuit.

Beautiful content, overly dramatic reading
Revisado: 04-02-22
I read this book (print version) several years ago and loved it. My Lay Dominican chapter chose this for discussion, but I couldn't find my paperback. I was happy to see it among Audible's selections. However, the narrator was often far too emotional and dramatic. It was distracting at times. Fortunately, the spiritual content is so good that I listened to the end.
If possible, I advise reading on Kindle or in print.

My first Virginia Woolf book
Revisado: 02-01-22
Hmmm, very different. I read a bit about the book in advance, so I was aware of the stream of consciousness style (the first of its kind.)
It was beautifully written, and the narration helped me quite a bit, but it was somewhat difficult to follow. I will likely try it again. (A tip I learned from a Woolf devotee.)
