Impressively abrupt ending
Revisado: 04-15-25
Another great addition to the series without feeling like it is simply a bunch of filler. If I could give it 4.5 I would my only complaint is that this story feels like it was cut off mid thought. All stories need to end at some point and I even understand where in the plot we left the crew but MAN when it ended I thought my phone died. The last bit jumps all over the place before a single sentence just sort of pops and closes things. A bit awkward but still great and better put together than some of the other books in the series in my opinion.

FRUSTRATING
Revisado: 02-04-25
there is so much potential with this series and yet it missed in this book again. the first one was a bit better in my opinion and I was hopeful the MC would really blossom this book. instead not only did she go the whole first book without actually doing anything the whole second book she is so nieve and just gets manipulated the whole time. nothing I hate more than a character who thinks one thing and the says and does the complete opposite.the relationships are written pretty flat. the character development is non existent and off brother the twists. you don't necessarily see them coming but ohhh boo do they feel like they undo what minimal development there is in this series. every chance to explain herself kiva fumbles is or "let's it slide". every time more lore drops of her families betrayals nothing comes of it and she just keeps going without batting an eye? i'm too hurt to talk let's just keep working together in a poorly motivated and poorly written rebellion? I wish I could say I was frustrated because it was written well or because of the plots development but even the cliff hanger at the end feels like I just wasted my time. if I didn't already use a credit on the third book I would probably DNF the series and if I could stop myself and others from picking up the series I would just give them a summary and save them the time.

Bad. Like BAD bad
Revisado: 12-12-24
normally I'm pretty lenient on books. Even books I don't love are listened to multiple times. This book is BAD. One listen was honestly too many listens. if I'm being totally honest I was a bit iffy on this series coming out of book two. it was kinda cringe but there was enough going on that I picked up book three. Book three is somehow way WAY emptier and lackluster compared to book two. the premise is neat I guess but clearly writing about it for this long is proving to be a challenge. The characters are mid and kind of nothing keeps you reading. I want to like the party and in some sections I do but it's just not enough.
the narration and voice acting is the okayest. the characters are fine enough but there are long awkward pauses that only highlight how bad this story is at times. this book has me questioning how I even made it this far into the series.
Overall, save your credit. save your money. don't fall into the "well I'm already two books in let's see how it is" trap that I did. Just move on to a different series. I don't want to say this series is going nowhere since maybe Rome will find a muse and the series will kick ass in a couple books but that is not the path it is on now.

Historia
Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

What a ride. love hate with this one.
Revisado: 10-23-23
Overall the story was good but yeesh. The new narrator is definitely jarring and different BUT not nearly as bad as some of these reviews make it out to be. The first 4 books were for sure done better but people are up in arms for minor details. I agree that there are some sections where she could stand do be a bit more professional in terms of background noise but overall they put a ton of emotion into the story!
now on to the story.... for the love of God the story.
let me say by the end of the book I have come to enjoy Nesta but it was a LONG LONG time to get there. So much happens in this book to push the series along but unfortunately it is told from the most unlikeable character. Yes she is supposed to be unlikeable but God is she a broken record for way too long. I spent the first 15 hours or so wishing that this story was told from anyone else's perspective. I'm here for the whole Nes Cas ship and it's been a long time coming but jeez. In the other books there is of course a lot of sex but this pook takes it to a whole new level. Nesta plays the stale part of wounded animal and the whole book is just her getting railed after every minor step in the right direction. Any action for the beginning portion of the book I found myself wishing I had the perspective of the people actually involved but instead I got an r/ihavesex fantasy where some of the stuff just sounds outright silly. I'm not going to pretend to be some all knowing sex genius but some of the stuff in this book I found myself laughing and wondering how it made it into the final version. I'll spare you the graphic details but it is like someone who never had sex before was asked what good sex was like with only scripted porn as a reference. After countless chapters of small annoyingly overdone character development followed by over the top sex in a loop there is a HARD wall where suddenly the small portions of the story between the sex get actually so tense and good. Nes is finally likeable and it's mostly because she finally uses her big girl words and stops feeling like a caricature and is actually even somewhat believable... maybe even endearing. The sex never really breaks the absurdity factor and it is more graphic than ever, but the last chapters finally come together in a way that leaves some warm and fuzzies to say the least.
TLDR: Everyone loves sex on some level this book is 85% graphic sloppy virgin sex fantasies and 15% unbelievably good plot that carries this story. This book could have and should have been the length of book 4 but instead of a sex and training montage for a chapter or two we got literally every dripping detail spanning like 50 chapters. I'm very glad I read it, I'm excited for book 6, but I would be doing you a disservice if I told you that this book was anything but down the middle. Throw it on 1.5x - 2x speed blow through the filler and slow down and listen to the plot when it shows up sporadically unless you have a specific needs to address listening to said filler chapters.
