Rocky start, but wonderful conclusion

What an amazing book, I can't wait to reread it. Brandon managed to tie every single plot thread, with both the themes and the plots, so nicely that it feels like a bow on a present. The start of the book was a little rocky, there was a lot of, "and then this" kinda scene transitions, but once the book picked up it really kept up.

This book has a very loosely defined magic system. The main character kind of just does whatever magic is needed in the moment, despite other characters making a huge deal out of her never being trained. This alone wouldn't be too bad, but I just don't really care for the main character. I don't fully understand her motivations, because every time she considers why she does what she's doing she lands back on, "Well I don't like the Queen, but my father wants to takeover the country and that's bad because he's not the King."
There are also a lot of payoffs without much promise. Her meeting her mother for the first time in 14 years felt like it was supposed to be intensely emotional, but it just felt kinda hollow because the main character missing her mother wasn't ever really set up.
Last thing, the main character gets kidnapped from the palace, and then has witty banter with her captors who are physically restraining her from leaving, and I'm just not big on that trope. Witty banter is nice and all, but in these kinds of situations it just feels... weird.

I wasn't sure what to expect when starting this book, other than that it was about another Apollo mission and there was likely going to be direct conflict. I was not disappointed at all.
This book was engaging from start to finish. I usually listen while at work and I even stayed late a couple days to reach a good stopping point. I cannot recommend this book enough.

There are definitely some clunky scenes here and there, but overall I still enjoyed the book. I like the potential of the magic system and the societies that form around it.
I think that Martell could have played with how magic influences the society and how the society influence the magic a little bit more.
Michael Kingman definitely needs some work, but to me it seems more like he is just trying to do his best but keeps making all of the wrong choices, and I can relate to that on some levels.
Some of the dialogue is a little clunky. A lot of, "I am going to kill you when I get the chance," but that never really seems to be fulfilled.

I was not a fan of the narrator. I don't have a very good memory (part of what drew me to this book) and I rely alot on the narration to keep track of who is who, but Skelley seems to only have 3 or 4 different voices that all sound generally the same.

Just got the second book, I can't wait to see how the story, the author, and the narrator grow.

The overall story wasn't too bad, I was intrigued by what was going on and entertained throughout. It bothers me though that the author seems to not know what artificial intelligence is. If a robot can't hold a conversation in an online chatroom, it also won't be able to hold a conversation with its programmers, yet from the very beginning Eve is talking to people in complex and meaningful ways.
Later on when Eve is interacting with people from the outside world, the author shows Eve having social anxiety, which I think was an ok expression of a robot not knowing how to act infront of people, especially new ones, but I don't think that it would be as pronounced as this. Maybe if a robot is this complex it will end up like that, but I have a hard time imagining it.

This review contains spoilers

The Martian is my favorite book, and I was very excited for this book. Going into this book, I loved hearing about all of the possible science going into a colony on the moon. Hearing about the character was a little disappointing though. The main character, Jazz, is a smiggler who never gets in trouble for her actions. Even at the end of the book, after she had almost killed everyone on the moon, she wasn't punished and somehow everyone loved her.

As far as the performance, Rosario Dawson started out well, but I soon discovered that her 'male voice' seems to simply be her talking so quietly I can hardly hear her. I listen to my books while driving, and I had to have the volume in my car all the way up just to hear Jazz's dad talking.

Confusing Narration

I thought that having multiple narrators would make this book more fun, but it just made things confusing. One character didn't have one voice, they had many different voices. Depending on who was narrating, any character would have a different voice, accent, and tone, which made it difficult to keep track of who said what. For instance the narrators for Mina Harker, John Seward, and Jonathan Harker all had a different voice for Van Helsing, and he had his own voice as well. This made things more confusing than interesting.

I was surprised to hear sound effects when I first started this book. I was skeptical, but very happy with how they were used. They really give a whole new feel to the way audiobooks work. It really feels like you're a part of what's going on, from wookie howls to the sounds of traffic. And the story is great, it ties in perfectly with the movies (well, before Force Awakens came out that is). Disney really shouldn't have gotten rid of all the canon. A perfect sequel in my opinion. Amazing book overall, most certainly would recommend.
