Childhood book reread at 72 Hel me captive again

Beautiful writing, life lessons (learned the hard way), mercy, grace and depiction of life and beliefs in long ago time of the 1600-1700’s. Our father read this book to us as children and would end each session on the cusp of an event to resolve, thus bringing us eagerly back the next night for more. I believe it lead all of us kids to have a spirit of adventure (along with books by Mark Twain, Joshua Slocum, and the like). We all (11 of us) ended up traveling overseas, sailing around, etc. and are still looking forward to our next adventure in our 70’s. Daniel Defoe rocks and every child should be gifted with the stories such as his.

Loved hearing about Sidney Crosby and his teammates, and the support from his team, leaders, fans, and his country, Canada! I didn’t miss one word. And I would be considered an old lady, but I love hockey, and I love this story.

I’ve had days like this…

With many seat mates. None led to romance or marriage. However, I have a huge painting from one seat mate about 20 years my senior for advice I gave him about conflict in his workplace. Others led to jobs. Another led to a young man spending a week of his vacation at our family reunion and experiences he never anticipated. Other times, on flights far from home, we discovered we knew the same people, loved the same places or could give travel tips on destinations. A wonderful vicarious listen!

Broke my heart. Makes

Heartbreaking narrative and song of the 2010 WV mine explosion due to greed and willful negligence that literally tore a community to shreds. I’m heartbroken and furious that those responsible got a slap on the wrist. This is a must read for those who think coal is the answer for energy in a country that allows companies to sacrifice the workers lives as they balance greed over lives. Greed wins. 😭

A “page turner”

I could not put this book down it was so captivating and had me on the edge of my seat throughout. So glad you offered it and hope that other people listen to it and learn a little bit more history about World War II, Norway, Germany, and the goodness of people. It’s also an encouragement to push on no matter how severe the pain or difficulties!

Captivating historical drama

Lisa See did more than tell the story of the Sea Women of Jeju Island. She shone a bright light on the US involvement in the slaughter of the Jeju citizens by their fellow Koreans, the occupying Japanese army and those enabled by the US government with weapons and policies. It was a reign of terror. How the women of the sea dealt with all of it is a raw account of first, their work in the sea, its dangers and rewards, and second, of life during the period between 1935 and the unveiling of the terror later in the 1990's through 2008. I couldn't stop listening. It makes my heart sad as I discovered that once again the US is as guilty as every other occupier in the world for terrorizing those they touch.

Heartbreaking yet a necessary read if there is ever to be justice for the women
