Will listen to it again!
Revisado: 11-21-21
I have the privilege to know personally the author and reader of this audiobook. This book, especially Steve's reading of it, both affirmed my affection for him has a person, professor, and friend, and enhanced my already considerable admiration for his late wife, Cokie. I listened to this book in less than 2 days while driving to and from my childhood home and nothing could be a more appropriate listen for that drive! Steve's recounting of Cokie's life renewed my gratitude for having crossed paths with this remarkable family and inspired me anew to be a better wife, daughter, person of faith, and most especially a better friend. Cokie's lifelong dedication to other women and to telling their stories was just the reminder I needed that it's okay to "do it all" and not feel guilt about the things we can't do. Her vision of women's complex roles throughout history was refreshing and I now look forward to reading her many books on that topic. Go ahead and listen to this book. You'll be so glad you did!

Historia
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

Frederick Backman does it again!
Revisado: 10-15-21
So quirky and touching. Beautifully written with great characters, as always! I just love his books! The pacing, character development, and plot twist were all sublime. This one was particularly great to listen to. I'm grateful Frederick Backman is such a prolific author so I have more to read!

A great Summer read (or listen)
Revisado: 08-27-17
The story is easy enough to listen to, although it does jump back and forth in time quite a bit. But it takes several interesting twists and turns, weaving together several story lines in unexpected ways. I really enjoyed this book and would probably read another by this author.

Historia
We never know what will happen next in Florida. We know only that, any minute now, something will. Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from some media person wanting to know, "What the hell is wrong with Florida?" Somehow, the state's acquired an image as a subtropical festival of stupid, and as a loyal Floridian, Dave begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. And people seem to take their pants off for no good reason. And it has flying insects the size of LeBron James. But it is a great state, and Dave is going to tell you why.

Hilarious book, you will laugh out loud
Revisado: 10-12-16
In typical Dave Barry style, this book was hilarious in its details. He covers some of his familiar rants (celebrity DJs) and some fresh territory (the infamous Florida Skunk Ape). This book is worth the listen...it actually made me feel a little better about our wacky country, and certainly its weirdest state.

A charming post-war tale
Revisado: 08-30-16
This story trods the well-worn sod of WWII war brides and their GIs, but I found the characters endearing and the narrator did a fantastic job bringing then to life. Many plot elements were predictable, but satisfying nevertheless. Worth a listen, especially if you get the audio book for a good deal.

Gritty cop novel, a must for DC locals
Revisado: 07-07-16
You can tell this cop novel was written by someone who knows DC...and not the more infamous political side of things, but the actual living, breathing city. Great depiction of a flawed hero and of a very real human trafficking crisis that impacts even the upper middle class neighborhoods of suburban Virginia. I hope Swinton will bring back Frank Marr for another round of troubled triumph.

Loved this story...but...

I didn't love the narration. Perhaps it was the accents. But the story itself was great, especially if you or a loved one have been involved in foster care or adoption. It was a quick listen.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

An uplifting read (listen) with plenty of heart
Revisado: 07-18-15
Great true story. Reads (or listens) like fiction. I found myself very attached to the characters and the narrator--the late, great Edward Herrmann. While the book is set at a very dark time in human history, it is a testament to the human spirit, Providence and the power of a team. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend, especially for book clubs.

When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

I listened to this book for my book club. What a wonderful choice. It is a lengthy audiobook, bit worth the time. I felt so invested in the characters and their lives, what happened to them and how their existence intersected. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction, especially set during WWII. Although I'd warn that it's not exactly a light and easy, bright and breezy beach read.
