Historia
Quinn Maybrook and her father have moved to tiny, boring Kettle Springs, to find a fresh start. But what they don’t know is that ever since the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory shut down, Kettle Springs has cracked in half. On one side are the adults, who are desperate to make Kettle Springs great again, and on the other are the kids, who want to have fun, make prank videos, and get out of Kettle Springs as quick as they can.

A good slasher with a predictable motive
Revisado: 07-08-24
I came for the slasher and almost left for the unoriginal motive of the killer. Cesare did a great job of ramping up the kills and leaving you in suspense of who’s going to die next. I didn’t find the motive very compelling (*spoiler* “Kids these days are lazy and entitled”) but, in the grand scheme of things, the motive isn’t really what’s the highlight of a good ol teen slasher book.
The narrator did a great job making her voice waver in fear and suspense. I especially liked her depiction of Rusty.

Historia
In an Indian village in the 1950s, a precocious child is born into a family of Dalit coconut farmers. King Rao will grow up to be the most accomplished tech CEO in the world and, eventually, the leader of a global, corporate-led government. In a future in which the world is run by the Board of Corporations, King’s daughter, Athena, reckons with his legacy—literally, for he has given her access to his memories, among other questionable gifts.

Beautifully written, incredibly thought provoking
Revisado: 09-29-23
My book club chose this as our September book, and we all loved it! Sitting under the cover of umbrellas during a rainy Seattle night, we discussed the various themes Vauhini Vara masterfully weaves throughout her debut novel. One of my fellow members grew up in Bainbridge, and I’ve visited Blake Island before—thus giving us the opportunity to better connect with Athena, the main character, as well as many of the cast of characters.
Additionally, Soneela Nankani did a terrific job transforming Vara’s written word into audio.
