Historia
Born in Somalia, a spare daughter in a large family, Shugri Said Salh was sent at age six to live with her nomadic grandmother in the desert. Salh grew to love the freedom of roaming with her animals and the powerful feeling of community found in nomadic rituals and the oral storytelling of her ancestors. As she came of age, though, both she and her beloved Somalia were forced to confront change, violence, and instability. Honest and tender, The Last Nomad is a riveting coming-of-age story of resilience, survival, and the shifting definitions of home.

Glad It Was Written
Revisado: 11-18-23
Good work. Important story to hear. I liked her honesty and her message of home because it reminded me of my mother who was also displaced from war.

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Modern movie style
Revisado: 04-26-21
A page turner. I had to remind myself to accept the authors style, which was very soap-opera like - which I have noticed many fiction are like this lately. I am not afraid of the topics she addresses but it seemed to be like she was hoping for a movie deal. For me, there was an overabundance of crisis in one story, making it difficult for me to believe it-sort of like a spy movie/novel or thriller. Once I categoried it more like that, it was easier to listen to. I wouldn't be able to call it a realistic fiction - seems the author intended to entertain using grotesque and vulgar crimes. I hope some people become more tolerent of southern border migrants, if that happens it's a good thing. I will read some stories written by Latinx authors now so I can compare. It could, however cement the whole criminal element steriotype too.

Uplifting Story
Revisado: 11-27-20
Historical fiction with music appreciation. A fantastic combination. I was so relieved to read a story of hope and inspiration. I highly recommend this for grades 5-10. In a world of anxiety this book is a light. My mother was a 5 year old refugee of WW2 in Germany; they lost everything, but not their lives. She also said "we were so lucky." This book reminds me of the hope she always had despite unbelievable hardship.
