Historia
In the near future, a civil servant is offered the salary of her dreams and is, shortly afterward, told what project she’ll be working on. A recently established government ministry is gathering “expats” from across history to establish whether time travel is feasible—for the body, but also for the fabric of space-time.

has a bit of that classic science fiction feel to it
Revisado: 04-09-25
in my mind good science fiction puts up a mirror to hard social and moral questions. It reflects back to us our world in a hypothetical way that makes these questions a bit more palatable, while elevating the conversation in our minds. This tale does that, and harkens back to the style of some of the science fiction writing I've read from the 60s and 70s.

Betrayed, terrified and alone, Elizabeth Cage has fled her home. With no plan and no friends, she arrives at the picturesque village of Greyston and finds herself involved in an ages-old ceremony that will end in death. And that might be the least of her problems - the Sorensen Institute would very much like to know her whereabouts. And Michael Jones is still out there, somewhere, she hopes. No matter how far and how fast she can run, trouble will always find Elizabeth Cage.

maybe my favorite Taylor series
Revisado: 04-04-25
I love this series by Jodi Taylor. I also love St
Mary's, thThe Time Police, Frogmorton Farm and the Bachelor Establishment. But at least for today, this is my favorite of her series and I hope she writes as prolifically about Elizabeth Cage as she does about Max's universe. Rushford is quite the busy place.

Historia
Dr. Renee Caisson knows there are worse things than an attractive man in uniform drafting her into a secret government project—especially when Major Jackson makes it clear that he isn’t bothered by her questionable past. But when her labs come back with decidedly odd results, the Major is forced to come clean over who the government is actually studying. Renee is shocked to learn her subjects are demonic-looking beings who call themselves “Neighbors”—refugees from a dying world, who arrived during the nation-wide solar eclipse.

Hard to listen to narration
Revisado: 06-13-24
Full disclosure, I'm not through the whole book yet, but I'm so aggravated by the narration I don't know if I'll finish it. The narrator's intense vocal fry for some characters and soft voice for others makes this very difficult to listen to in any but a quiet room. The soft speaking and vocal fry are both really, really distracting and ruining the story rather that buoying it. The change in volume from normal speaking voice to soft, quiet voice has me "rewinding" to re-listen occasionally.
I've read or listened to most of Kim Harrisons books. I'm a huge fan. So far, this story tracks with the quality of content she puts out.

very little content editing
Revisado: 04-16-24
The author created a story in which every bad thing that could happen, does. And by book 3 the series stops being exciting and instead becomes boringly predictable.

How do you define yourself when others have already decided who you are? Six years ago, when Camden Daniels came back from war without his younger brother, no one in the small town of Alba, Colorado, would forgive him - especially his father. He left, swearing never to return. But a desperate message from his father brings it all back. The betrayal. The pain. And the need to go home again. But home is where the one person he still loves is waiting. Willow. The one woman he can never have. Because there are secrets buried in Alba that are best left in the dark.

Having read the Fourth Wing series, I didn't know what to expect here. It's a complex love story with some twists and turns - so in that way similar to the Fourth Wing books. It's set in an interesting place that reminds me of a couple of the small towns in Park County, CO but I won't say more than that. Overall, a good, engaging listen.

great story, utterly annoying narration
Revisado: 08-31-23
This is a really good story - well done again, Ms. l Holmes. Big BUT.... the narrator has inappropriately stepped into the story. She lisps; she draws out words unnecessarily; her pacing is annoyingly and deliberately slow. Only way to negate her distracting performance and focus on the story is to increase the playback speed (this is the first time I've ever done this). The narrator has elevated the importance of her performance over that of the story. I'm here to be told a story by a worthwhile author. A good narrator doesn't use their performance to become part of the story. Ugh I just can't keep talking about this I'm so annoyed.

I love this series and this author
Revisado: 07-25-23
I'll keep it short, but really, if you are at this point in the series, you know what a treasure it is. However, if you are somehow questioning if it's worth your time to keep going, it is. Its a dang good story. A lot of loose ends are tied up, many questions answered, A few good new characters are introduced. And the future of St. Mary's is....
There are also a few important time police tie-ins that should make the next book in the series really interesting. Dr. Dowson's shenanigans are still making me chuckle.

mediocre in the genre
Revisado: 07-02-23
As a Kim Harris fan, I came in to this series with some knowledge of the genre. I wanted to like this but really, I just couldn't get in to it. Specifically, the writing fell flat. Sentences weren't creatively structured. And quite possibly specific only to me as a St. Louis area native, the voicing of some female sub-characters with a supposed midwest accent (sounded very mock-MN, WI, SD etc/police chief in Fargo) that was NOT the correct white person Stl accent - not even close - just simply bugged me. You so rarely have a story set in St. Louis that I've never experienced this before. And so now I feel for all people with regional accents who must experience this phenomenon all the time.
