Historia
Set in a middle-class neighborhood in Atlanta in the 1980s, Silver Sparrow revolves around James Witherspoon's two families - the public one and the secret one. When the daughters from each family meet and form a friendship, only one of them knows they are sisters. It is a relationship destined to explode when secrets are revealed and illusions shattered. As Jones explores the backstories of her rich yet flawed characters - the father, the two mothers, the grandmother, and the uncle - she also reveals the joy, as well as the destruction, they brought to one another's lives.

Immature, poorly written and full of empty advice
Revisado: 07-05-21
As an experienced psychotherapist completing a PhD in adult attachment, I found this book is painful to read. I forced myself to finish it but the poor writing, limited understanding of the deeper nuances of attachment, and avalanche of poor and trite advice was painful. The book is full of empty, obvious, and relatively oblivious suggestions for couple connection and healing— many of these suggestions lack depth and consideration of context and come across as judgmental, shallow, and harmful. I do not recommend this for personal or academic reading... there are much richer texts available that acknowledge the nuances of human relationships and the complexity of healing from early trauma/attachment disruption. The book also appears to be narrated by Siri? Yikes. People seeking help for attachment issues or seeking a deeper understanding of human relationships deserve better.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

This take on racism is unhelpful
Revisado: 07-02-20
Disappointing— little real feedback on how to move forward — obsessive accusatory text that will undoubtably shut down deeper conversations about race and how to move forward to a more inclusive, equitable and just world. Looking forward to hearing some other voices on modern anti racism philosophy.... hoping we can actually get some reflection and forward momentum here.

Historia
Ben Gibson is many things, but he's not sorry, and he's not a liar. He will tell you exactly about what happened on what started as a simple school camping trip in the mountains. About who lived and who died. About who killed and who had the best of intentions. But he's going to tell you in his own time. Because after what happened on that mountain, time is the one thing he has plenty of.

Not my favorite...
Revisado: 11-15-18
Story needed more depth— the characters were underdeveloped and I found it hard to connect with the ramblings of this group of unremarkable teens. Story itself was a little random and melodramatic. Not my cup of tea.

Historia
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

Historia
Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question: Why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed.

As a therapist in the field of trauma not finding this that helpful
Revisado: 03-10-18
This books seems self congratulatory and the information is diluted with author personal commentary that makes it annoying — I realized I downloaded this book twice and then returned it because I found it so off putting
Also the author writes like someone who doesn’t personally understand trauma and speaks in absolutes when he only has once piece of the puzzle. I don’t like how he continues to tell the reader to bring his book to therapy (literally says this like 10 times) as if he’s the only one who can help; it seems self promoting and unhelpful. He’s obviously bright and well established, but his commentary undermines any solid content that might actually help people
