Historia
This is the definitive biography of Joseph Stalin from his birth to the October Revolution of 1917, a panoramic and often chilling account of how an impoverished, idealistic youth from the provinces of tsarist Russia was transformed into a cunning and fearsome outlaw who would one day become one of the 20th century's most ruthless dictators. In this monumental book, Ronald Grigor Suny sheds light on the least understood years of Stalin's career, bringing to life the turbulent world in which he lived and the extraordinary historical events that shaped him.

a little too broad and detailed
Revisado: 12-26-24
Im sure this is a wonderful research but i was expecting a book on Stalin, rather found a book that can be titled Entire History of Communism, Bolsheviks, Mensheviks and its leaders and Stalin.

Too many numbers to little time
Revisado: 08-15-23
If you have a fetish for numbers this is amazing however as an audiobook these numbers sound like looking at a balance sheet of a company, useful but boring. A simple summary, analogy from the numbers would have been sufficient, and there are such summaries within the book, however they are seldom and so easy to miss.

Historia
In a seamless meshing of exhaustive research, brilliant synthesis and narrative élan, Simon Sebag Montefiore chronicles the life and lives of Stalin’s court from the time of his acclamation as “leader” in 1929, five years after Lenin’s death, until his own death in 1953 at the age of 73. Through the lens of personality - Stalin’s as well as those of his most notorious henchmen, Molotov, Beria and Yezhov among them - the author sheds new light on the oligarchy that attempted to create a new world by exterminating the old.

Historia
Award-winning journalist Masha Gessen's understanding of the events and forces that have wracked Russia in recent times is unparalleled. In The Future Is History, Gessen follows the lives of four people born at what promised to be the dawn of democracy. Each of them came of age with unprecedented expectations, some as the children and grandchildren of the very architects of the new Russia, each with newfound aspirations of their own - as entrepreneurs, activists, thinkers, and writers, sexual and social beings.

Beautiful but a bit odd
Revisado: 11-24-21
This is a beautiful book but unfortunately the audiobook partly misses the rhythm and fails to capture the theme and time changes with the narration. The book jumps from small personal stories into historial events and these changes and jumps in theme are difficult to capture with authors voice. I wish they had hired a professional to voice the book. It references important works such as of Erich Fromm and Karl Popper and places them into Russia of today, its an amazing analysis of Russia.

Opening with a panorama of Russian society, from the cloistered world of the Tsar to the brutal life of the peasants, A People’s Tragedy follows workers, soldiers, intellectuals and villagers as their world is consumed by revolution and then degenerates into violence and dictatorship. Drawing on vast original research, Figes conveys above all the shocking experience of the revolution for those who lived it, while providing the clearest and most cogent account of how and why it unfolded.

Amazing book and fantastic narration
Revisado: 10-29-21
enjoyed the flow of this book very much. It is beautifully prepared. The narration is the best among Russian books i listened. But one thing: There is a nice summary at the last chapter. Chapter 54 and i think it might be a nice introduction into Russian history if listened first.

Historia
The writer and satirist Teffi was a literary sensation in Russia until war and revolution forced her to leave her country forever. Memories is her blackly funny and heartbreaking account of her final, frantic journey into exile across Russia - travelling by cart, freight train and rickety steamer - and the 'ordinary and unheroic' people she encounters. From refugees setting up camp on a dockside to a singer desperately buying a few 'last scraps' of fabric to make a dress, all are caught up in the whirlwind; all are immortalised by Teffi's penetrating gaze.

Nice but overexcited narration
Revisado: 09-30-21
The story is lovely but the narration is too fast, too loud and too much in a puzzling british accent at times to understand. Its simply too excited to focus on the story. I find myself wondering why certain people in the story speak with different british accents. This rushed narration combined with the accents makes it impossible to focus or even understand.

Historia
Can trauma be inherited? It is this question that sets Alex Halberstadt off on a quest to name and acknowledge a legacy of family trauma, and to end a century-old cycle of estrangement. As Halberstadt revisits the sites of his family’s formative traumas, he uncovers a multigenerational transmission of fear, suspicion, melancholy, and rage. And he comes to realize something more: Nations, like people, possess formative traumas that penetrate into the most private recesses of their citizens’ lives.

some depth and some historical narration
Revisado: 09-21-21
The book started with a nice trip across continents to Russia find mysteries of a family and mysteries of a history in USSR, its intriguing. However the second chapter suddenly dives into "History of Jews in Lithuania" which seems to be a completely different subject for a completely different book. Then the subject is all around the place all the way at some pooint to some kids (relatives of author) dressing as american indians, for no absolute reason. Its hard to focus what is happening for what purpose and clearly has no connection to Soviet union.
