Historia
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. Chick Flick????

This book seems to try to follow some sort of agenda. It really reads like a chick flick with a more serious tone that does not feel natural.

Einstein’s Fridge tells the incredible epic story of the scientists who, over two centuries, harnessed the power of heat and ice and formulated a theory essential to comprehending our universe. “Although thermodynamics has been studied for hundreds of years…few nonscientists appreciate how its principles have shaped the modern world” (Scientific American).

After listening to about half the book, the only take away is info on brothers, schools, dogs, fathers, mothers, but not much about any science. Just strings of bios with a smattering of the main topic where details are too thin and far apart to present a coherent idea. Really was a boring read for me.

Henry Ford’s Plan for the American Suburb: Dearborn and Detroit

Historia
A welfare capitalist, Henry Ford was a leader on many fronts - he raised wages, increased leisure time, and transformed workers into consumers, and he was the most effective at making suburbs an intrinsic part of American life. The decade was dominated by this new political economy - also known as "Fordism" - linking mass production and consumption. The rise of Dearborn demonstrated that Fordism was connected to mass suburbanization as well. Ultimately, Dearborn proved to be a model that was repeated throughout the nation.

Great listen on many levels.
Revisado: 11-24-20
Since a child, I was exposed to many early Ford cars. My family collected and restored Model A's, several V-8 models as well as trucks and tractors. Throughout my teens in the 70's I was the mechanic for them and I drove them in parades and worked on them all. As such, I also was fanatical about reading all the history of the Ford cars, production systems, and Henry himself, so there was not much more to know by the time I was an adult. I still have most of my repair manuals for all those old cars from the 20's - 50's.
This book was a joy in that it touches on a more external aspect of the Man and Machine that was Ford. How the world was changed may be well known at a general level, but this book gives specific down to earth details on the immediate impact on the environs of Detroit which I, as the son of a land developer, can really relate to. I have only just started, but the details of the social and economic impact of the area surrounding the Ford business operations is fascinating to me. I am looking forward to finishing this as it is pulling together the details of my most persistent hobby in a meaningful way.
If it wasn't by the automobile, it would have been something or someone else that changed the world so fundamentally during the 1900's. Undoubtedly something like the computer had the same effect and its own history, but this one about the automobile is mine and my generation.

Great alternative to standard perspective.
Revisado: 09-28-18
My headline means that this book is an alternative way to review the material as long as you already have some basic understanding of this topic. I would not recommend it as a primary text, but highly praise it for a review and clarification. This book seem to fill in many holes in my knowledge of this topic because it provides a way to think "outside the box" and gave me many "ah-ha" moments. Sometimes you need multiple perspectives to cover areas where we all have preconceptions and confirmation bias that obscure some important details. I do realize that many professionals in the field will poo-poo this book as being too basic or irrelevant. But for readers like me, who have been piecing this information together from multiple sources over many years, it may provide a summary that ties all the loose ends together buy tying a "story" to a complex subject. Relating this information to a story provides a memory aid as well as provided some brain hacks to help form and or solidify difficult concepts.
I think this work was ingenious for people in my situation. Kudos!

Do you make your own choices or have circumstances beyond your control already decided your destiny? For thousands of years, this question has intrigued and perplexed philosophers, scientists, and everyone who thinks deliberately about how they choose to live and act. For if free will makes us accountable for our choices, does the opposite hold true, that determinism absolves us of responsibility?

An irritation

Any additional comments?
I no longer can listed to these titles by this publisher. The majestic horn music with the canned clapping between chapters of most of these books is somehow so distracting that is interferes with learning. It may sound strange, but the brain detects this pattern and starts to focus on the littlest repetitive variations in the clapping, time after time, which interferes with concentration. Kind if a psychological bugaboo. Gives a falseness to the production contrary to its intended purpose.

Not my cup of tea.
Revisado: 06-16-17
Any additional comments?
This seemed to me way over the top for extraneous detail. Its one of these promising titles that really have little to say about anything but contained lots personal details. I could not finish it because for every one little tittle of technical info, I had to endure 100 details as mundane as the color of some scientists eyeglass frames. What he liked to eat, how long a plane flight was, where he vacationed, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. Nope.. Not my cup of tea. The interesting stuff was soooo far apart, I would forget the topic of the chapter by the time something relevant was stated. One has to wonder where some authors get all this trivial hearsay from people they never knew from so long ago? And... well, lets just say no more.

Beware, May not be what you think.
Revisado: 12-13-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Only management types may be interested to some degree.
Has B-17 Flying Fortress Restoration turned you off from other books in this genre?
no, I just need to be more careful.
What three words best describe Bill Nevitt’s performance?
O K maybe
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from B-17 Flying Fortress Restoration?
Most of it
Any additional comments?
This book is not really a technical process of restoring a classic machine. It is a description of a mangers view of a project. The whole book for me can be condensed as such.
We had this need. We did some political maneuvering to get the raw material we needed for our output of this need. We found this old classic plane. It was covered in "crud" that you wouldn't want to get on your new suit. WE solved some problems transporting it. We got HR to organize a GREAT team. We invested in capital that could be used for other purposes in future and would increase efficiency. Management got the team to work real hard to clean the crud and polish it up. Another team fixed the broken stuff. Other teams did other stuff. Now it looks real nice (even if it will never fly again). You can even sit in the pilot seat without getting your pants dirty. Revenues are up!!
This would be interrupted at every sentence by a testimonial parroting the exact same words.
CEO's resume maybe?
Maybe I gave up too early, but the first half of the book was this pattern. The first red flag was when it was stated that this "restored" machine was never to fly again, but apparently just be eye candy. The second was when the initial assessment consisted of "it was completely covered in crud". I want to learn something when I read and this just did not deliver for me. If you cannot return the book if you don't like it, consider the cost a donation to a good cause... I guess.

Historia
From the time of the Norman Conquest to the present day, the New Forest, along England’s southern coast, has remained an almost mythical place. It is here that Saxon and Norman kings rode forth with their hunting parties, and where William the Conqueror’s son Rufus was mysteriously killed. The mighty oaks of the forest were used to build the ships for Admiral Nelson’s navy, and the fishermen who lived in Christchurch and Lymington helped Sir Francis Drake fight off the Spanish Armada.

Beware, Abridged. Just a "Readers Digest" version.
Revisado: 07-18-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No, I was disappointed. I didn't realize it was an abridged copy. Most would say "so what?".
Well, I started reading this book when it first came out. I was not able to finish for one reason or another, but the picture in my head of what I did read stayed with me for all these years. After listening to this audio version, something was flat. Missing... It didn't inspire the imaginative pictures like the first time. Then I checked and found out it was an abridgement.
Something really good was left out. The mood, the atmosphere, whatever. It just does not feel more than mundane now. Like reading a "Readers Digest" version of "Gone with the Wind" or some such thing. I do not think I want to finish this audiobook.
If you’ve listened to books by Edward Rutherfurd before, how does this one compare?
Bland.
What does Lynn Redgrave bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Very good narration. Excellent!
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No, Movies are an abridgement as well. And usually butchered for sensationalism.
Any additional comments?
Feel dumb I didn't spot the abridgement classification.

The Christian Mystic Warriors is a book that was written for spirit-filled believers who are looking for more than religion. Many people are looking for more than Sunday morning worship and praise songs. These mystic believers are looking for a more deeper meaningful life as believers in Jesus Christ. This book is for them.

Not very inspiring.
Revisado: 09-15-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Not much to be done sadly.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Couldn't get through a quarter of the book.
What aspect of Kelly Libatique’s performance would you have changed?
I would like the reader to have seemed engaged. Like HE had a message to convey to the world and not just reading to a class who is asleep.
Was The Christian Mystic Warriors worth the listening time?
No. It was written in a difficult to follow style that reminds me of a sermon made by a detached religious authority. Not made for interaction or inspiring thought. Just a dull monolog written in a religious style to sound authentic and read by a disinterested person who injected some inflection to the language, but it all was flat anyway. It was as though a sunday school teacher was reading a doctorial dissertation without really understanding it. It seemed like it was written to sound like an extension to a KJV Bible and not for the layman. Drove me nuts and could not listen long even though I am VERY interested in subject matter.
Any additional comments?
This was my most disappointing purchase in this subject catagory. I like books that are written by those who really understand people as well as the subject matter. Authors that really want to get a message across as opposed to just becoming published. AND... readers who participate in the project.
