**SPOILER**
I battled with whether he was schizophrenic. Learning his details, his background, the way the plot unfolded with the main character grieving for his brother only to be thrown into a world of others under the guise of exploring alternate worlds. So much character development, plot holes, methapors, only to find out that it was a symbolic way of expressing the mental turmoil he was undergoing from childhood experiencing life, learning evil, understanding war, capitalism, socialism, idealism, lies, love, loyalty, betrayal, differing cultures, racism, sexual identity/orientation/preference, loss, inclusitivity, depravity, shame, lust, regret, the grey area of life, the all encompassing existential dread, and so on. An incredible picture of what the mind can create during its own grieving process. Amazing illustration! It seemed so real, I actually believed him. Then, at points, I noticed notes of symptoms that met certain criteria for Schizophrenia if not on set psychosis. This is a perfect illustration of what can set ones mind to develop Schizophrenia after a traumatic event. Trauma through loss of a loved one.
For those experiencing the sensation of these symptoms, it is in fact real, it is in fact happening! Far extended from adjustment disorder bereavement with comorbid symptoms arising depression, ptsd, acute stress, the list goes on. All of the aforementioned while also battling with schizophrenia and how it expresses itself within the mind. The brains way of trying to protect the individual, having them recede into themselves, forming images to give them a safe space to process their grief in their own way but in that also devoting much needed energy to that one process, neglecting other factors for self preservation. The mind can literally crack and depending on the persons temperament, the brain will automatically do its best to protect the individual, no matter if it means allowing the body to fall into depravity. Goodness! Such an amazing find. I would love to see if the author could create a book 3 but it seems like the main charater may have died and the only way to keep the book going is if he survives the accident and is put in a coma. Whose to say. Nonetheless, this was a refreshing read!!!

As a Nigerian born and partly raised, this takes me back to when I completed my secondary school in Nigeria. Everything I listened to in this book was exactly the experience and more. At the time, I was in senior secondary so this gave me a snapshot of what the junior secondary girls were experiencing. This book is quite extraordinary. I wish there were more books that frame our Nigerian lived lives like this. ❤️

nothing to write home about. the narrator was too expressive and made it seem melow dramatic. on parts she should have expressed more, she puased. I'm sure the story would have seemed better if the narrator matched the tone of the plot.

I loved the plot. It was written simply but well enough to allow me to picture every emotion and the surroundings the author set out to convey. Octavia E. Butler is a brilliant writer. I have now listened to all her books on Audible and like always, she did not disappoint with this book. However, I felt immoral in the sense of the pedophilic imagery that was being constructed. It would have been one thing if it were just vampire or Ina sleeping with one another but the incorporation of human adults sleeping with what was a physically young child put me in a state of immoral/ mental unalignment. I struggled with deep moral dissonance having to accept the she was technically "grown" but even still a child compared to her own kind. It was weird that even the human adults could visibly see that she was a child but still went ahead to sleep with her and then further became okay with the idea only when they were told that she was in fact older than them in human years. It's like those pedophiles who say that the child they are courting has an "old soul." If this line of thought in this book can be accepted then should the pedophiles line of thought also be? But at the end of the day, what gave me solace was understanding that pedophilia is proclaimed on those who engage in sexual acts with children. Young ones are regarded as children becuase they do not have the ability to fully consent largely in part becuase their prefrontal cortex (moral center) has not fully developed skewing thier ability to make well informed or sound decisions. Basically, they are easily impressionable and/ or gullible. In this case Shurri/ Renae is only regarded as a child becuase she has not delevoped to the point of being able to reproduce which is not necessarily regarding her mental development. But to counter that train of thought somehow, males of her kind cannot mate with her becuase "she is too young..."
The more I try to apply logic to this story the more I undergo a weird immoral/ mental alignment. But overall, great story. Very captivating nonetheless! I gave the performance 4 stars becuase the reader seemed to be whinging the whole time. I have noticed a theme in Octavia's books were she seems to be writing from a persepective that illustrates the anxiety one feels when placed in a specific situation but I think the narrator over did it a bit and just seemed to come across as whinning the whole time...

I was enthralled by how she used her words to paint a picture I had never seen but felt so vividly. I found myself doubting Kevin over and over as a black woman myself. Somehow she thought me to understand how love between a black and white person could be so pure and true. None of the nonsense of our political society skewing their love. An honest love, a true love. Brilliant, just brilliant. Rest in peace mam'

Extraordinary imagery. Riveting storyline. Captivating to say the least. A perspective that is generally overlooked. #insight

could have been better as far as the story goes. I was expecting something completely different. I love the way Octavia describes each and every character the scenery and everything. But the story itself could have been better. I was expecting something different after book two and I'm a little bit disappointed.
