The only negative comment I have is about the story Sherlock Holmes and the Butterfly Effect by Christine’s Macia. It was a very original and enjoyable story except for the unfortunate line at the beginning where she describes reality ‘trembling like a child prostitute before their first client’ !? My goodness what an extremely poor choice of words and completely unnecessary in all ways.

Lyndsay Faye - international best seller, translated into 15 languages, and a two-time Edgar Award nominee - first appeared on the literary scene with Dust and Shadow, her now-classic novel pitting Sherlock Holmes against Jack the Ripper, and later produced The Whole Art of Detection, her widely acclaimed collection of traditional Watsonian tales. Now Faye is back with Observations by Gaslight, a thrilling volume of both new and previously published short stories and novellas narrated by those who knew the Great Detective.

Would not recommend
Revisado: 03-17-22
Overall the book was disappointing. The male narrator has a habit of ending every sentence with the same uplift of his voice in the same tone. It can be grating after awhile.
The author goes overboard with her use of adjectives and too often feels it necessary to describe every physical feature of the surroundings, Holmes etc. to the point of redundancy. This practice does not add to the story after awhile but rather detracts from it. Because if the above mentioned redundancy the stories take much longer than they need to. A lot of words, not much plot.
Henry Wiggins and Martha Hudson’s stories were fresh and added details not found in other Holmes pastiches. Irene Adler’s story, while interesting, had a mundane and unsatisfying plot and ending and was way too lengthy. The last story by Lorax was one I quit half way through. The book is ok but would not recommend it for the reader well acquainted with original Holmes stories and the myriad of excellent pastiches available on audible.

Historia
Follow Sherlock Holmes on four mysteries that his best friend and Chronicler, Dr. Watson, has decided to publish after some years. In the first story, an irritating and unsuccessful suit salesman plummets to his death from one of the highest cliffs in England...only he didn't jump. The second story recounts a chemistry professor found shot to death in his laboratory after having dabbled in alchemy and seemingly turning lead into gold. The third story finds a wealthy businessman bludgeoned to death in his locked and guarded hotel room.

Don’t bother

I love Sherlock Holmes and have every Conan Doyle story read by Simon Vance as well as almost every “new” Holmes audio book. This one is the worst narrating I have ever heard. The inflections are completely inappropriate, he says words incorrectly placing emphasis on the wrong syllables consistently. The voice sounds like the recordings you get when all the words or numbers have been pre-recorded and are being placed in new sentences. Truly, truly awful. Elementary children can read better. The stories are ok but not good enough to slog through the narrating. Pass on this one.

Historia
Internationally best-selling author Lyndsay Faye became enamored with tales of Sherlock Holmes and his esteemed biographer, Dr. John Watson, as a child and later began spinning these quintessential characters into her own works of fiction - from her acclaimed debut novel, Dust and Shadow, which pitted the famous detective against Jack the Ripper, to a series of short stories for the Strand Magazine, whose predecessor published the very first Sherlock Holmes short story in 1891.

The Whole Art of Detection
Revisado: 03-17-20
Other than the descriptive language was a bit too flowery and Holmes’ character not quite as aloof as Conan Doyle’s stories the plots were excellent and I enjoyed it immensely. No one can ‘out-Sherlock’ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but Lyndsay Faye’s characters were as true as I would like and Simon Vance did a superb job. Love his narrations.
I would recommend this to a Holmes fan without reservation.
