Historia
Studies show that nearly 70 percent of divorces are initiated by women—women who are tired, fed up, exhausted, and unhappy. We’ve all seen how the media portrays divorcées: sad, lonely, drowning their sorrows in a bottle of wine. Lyz Lenz is one such woman whose life fell apart after she reached a breaking point in her twelve-year marriage. But she refused to take part in that tired narrative and decided to flip the script on divorce.

REPETITIVE

The topic of this book interests me deeply. However, I couldn’t make it through the first chapter because the author repeats every point at least eight times. This should have been an article.

Historia
Growing up in the Hasidic community of Brooklyn’s Borough Park, Sara Glass knew one painful truth: what was expected of her and what she desperately wanted were impossibly opposed. Tormented by her attraction to women and trapped in a loveless arranged marriage, she found herself unable to conform to her religious upbringing and soon, she made the difficult decision to walk away from the world she knew. Sara’s journey to self-acceptance began with the challenging battle for a divorce and custody of her children, an act that left her on the verge of estrangement from her family and community.

Groundbreaking
Revisado: 06-18-24
This is a gripping memoir. It touches on many relevant themes regarding relationships between men and women and power imbalances, particularly within the Jewish ultra orthodox communities. The author is one of the few women who escaped the repressive life of being an ultra orthodox wife. Her story illustrates the cruelty of life for those women, and how the religious laws infringe upon basic human rights guaranteed by our justice system. The story was amazing and I could not put it down. I hope Sara Glass writes more books. Her knowledge about the effects of trauma came through, and it would be interesting if she wrote a book about how to heal from trauma.

Historia
Newly graduated from college, aspiring writer Beth Hayes is elected by her family to house-sit the Island Gamble. Buoyed by sentimental memories of growing up on this tiny sandbar seemingly untouched by time, Beth vows to give herself over to the Lowcountry force and discover the wisdom it holds. Just as she vows she will never give into the delusional world of white picket fences, minivans, and eternal love, she meets Max Mitchell.

Zero Stars

I agree completely with the one star reviews above. This book is unlike any other Dorethea Benton Frank books. The story was painfully predictable and the characters simplistic and shallow. The main character was so dumb.

Historia
Sylvie Pelletier recounts leaving her family’s snowbound mountain cabin to work in a manor house for the Padgetts, owners of the marble-mining company that employs her father and dominates the town. Sharp-eyed Sylvie is awed by the luxury around her; fascinated by her employer, the charming “Countess” Inge, and confused by the erratic affections of Jasper, the bookish heir to the family fortune. Her fairy-tale ideas of romance take a dark turn when she realizes the Padgetts’ lofty philosophical talk is at odds with the unfair labor practices that have enriched them.

Narration is a Complete Joke
Revisado: 01-01-23
This narrator is the worst I’ve ever heard, and I listen to one or two audiobooks a week. You won’t hear how bad the narration is through the sample because the narrator’s natural voice is fine. Except for the main character, all the other characters have accents that are beyond annoying, which is why I said the narration is a joke. It’s a million times worse than nails on a chalkboard. It’s impossible to evaluate the book after listening to and being so offended by this narrator. What a shame.

Historia
In the spring of 1972, Joyce Maynard, a freshman at Yale, published a cover story in The New York Times Magazine about life in the sixties. Among the many letters of praise, offers for writing assignments, and request for interviews was a one-page letter from the famously reclusive author, J.D. Salinger. At Home in the World is the story of a girl who loved and lived with J.D. Salinger, and the woman she became. A crucial turning point in Joyce Maynard's life occurred when her own daughter turned eighteen--the age Maynard was when Salinger first approached her.

Excellent Memoir
Revisado: 07-23-22
This is a gripping memoir, narrated by the author. Joyce Maynard is a great narrator for her memoir. Her voice is soothing, and as the author, she has the right emphasis and intonation. As other reviewer‘s mentioned, there is a slight clicking sound in the background at times. I was able to ignore the sound and enjoy the story. If a faint clicking sound in the background will distract you and make listening annoying, I suggest you read the book. However, if you can tune out the clicking, letting it be white noise, the audible version is well worth it. Criticisms of Maynard for revealing parts of her relationship with J. D. Salinger are unwarranted. Maynard discusses how the relationship affected her life. She couldn’t possibly have written the memoir without any reference to the relationship as it has affected every aspect of who she is. Menard does not exploit her relationship with Salinger. On the contrary, as a middle aged man, Salinger exploited Maynard when she was a young woman.

Historical Fiction at its Finest
Revisado: 05-30-22
I could not put this book down. The book has a great plot and characters. Although this story goes back-and-forth in time, it is done well. So many authors use the technique recently and do so in an annoying way, where as soon as the story gets interesting, it switches back to a different time. Here I did not find the technique frustrating.

The beloved #1 Essence best-selling authors of Tryin' to Sleep in the Bed You Made now deliver a novel in which you'll meet their most unforgettable characters yet. Carmen, Jewel, and Regina could not be more different. When they meet as freshmen at Columbia University, they're pretty confident that a friendship among them isn't in the cards.

I love Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant. This is another great work of art. This book has it all: great plot, nice character development, good pacing and it’s even, at times, laugh out loud funny! Listen to (good narration) or read this book.

Historia
They were three Black girls. Dawn, tall and studious; her sister, Kim, younger by three years and headstrong as they come; and her best friend, Debra, already prom-queen pretty by third grade. They bonded—fervently and intensely in that unique way of little girls—as they roamed the concrete landscape of Bronzeville, a historic neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, the destination of hundreds of thousands of Black folks who fled the ravages of the Jim Crow South.

Great Memoir and Narrator
Revisado: 05-06-22
This is a very well written and interesting memoir. Bronzeville in Chicago is a fairly unique place and Turner’s book captures it brilliantly. Turner also gives an accurate account of growing up in a big midwestern city during the late 60’s/early 70’s. The book was hard to put down. I HIGHLY recommend Three Girls from Bronzeville!

All the Great Reviews are Perplexing
Revisado: 01-17-22
The narrator is terrible. Listen to the sample! It doesn’t change or improve. I could have gotten over the bad narration, however, if there was anything redeeming about the story or the characters. The entire story is comprised of an event or occurrence, followed by the most obvious, predictable and mundane reflection.
