Narrator 5, Stories 3
Revisado: 09-03-24
There's nothing really wrong with these stories, but I just don't think Dorothy Sayers is a very good writer. The narrator brings them up to a much higher level than they deserve. If I had had to read these in a physical book, I'd have given up. That said, it's a great value if you like your books by the lb.

Can't Believe I've Never Heard of This Woman!
Revisado: 03-02-24
If this is an accurate retelling of Liz Renay's life then we have all been done a disservice by not knowing about her flashy, gossipy life previously.
The narrator doesn't start out great, but she improves, and her inflection reflects the emotion of the scene- which I like. The one drawback to this story is that this is an obviously self-written biography (no ghost writer), and while it is dramatically correct, and perfectly coherent, there are very few flowery connecting phrases to spin out the story or make it flow. It's packed with drama, but in many cases I would have loved more details, and an actual author might have given us that. It ends in her thirties, surely this charming woman has more to say!
Regardless of my minor criticism, an extremely interesting life, wish it was longer, and I'm about to go get her juicy follow up sex tell-all *right now*.

Author is a Try-Hard ...
Revisado: 11-29-23
...when it comes to enflowering the language to such a degree that's it embarrassing to hear, and the narrator (who has a nice speaking voice) is only making it worse with his not very believable accents. Bummer! I actually bought 4 of this authors books at the 80% discount, but they are going to languish unread since the same narrator is throughout the lot.

The fascinating biography of the man who laid the foundation for the CIA. One of the most celebrated and highly decorated heroes of World War I, a noted trial lawyer, presidential adviser and emissary, and chief of America’s Office of Strategic Services during World War II, William J. Donovan was a legendary figure. Donovan, originally published in 1982, penetrates the cloak of secrecy surrounding this remarkable man. The result is the definitive biography that Donovan himself had always expected Dunlop would write.

Historia
The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

Great Novel, So-So Author Narration
Revisado: 07-16-23
I'd like to begin positively by saying I really liked this story. The author did an excellent job of describing people in their own minds and situations, and he sure can turn a phrase. His voice is superb, gravely and sexy even, and fits the main character very well. However, this book could have been elevated to incredible status of he had even a days worth of voice coaching/acting. He just.... reads it. Audiobooks are a *performance*, I want to be immersed in their world for a little while. Also, he does zero distinction in voice between ANY of the characters. Not even a differentiation between male and female, which makes it very hard sometimes to know who is speaking when the main character goes from a long inner monologue, and then back into conversation. A shame. Could have been five stars instead of three if only he'd been assed to think about this.
That said, it's not enough to put me off his books, The man can write!

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

It was a great book, and my five star rating straight across SHOULD reflect that. I don't see why we are now required to leave a written review just to leave a star rating, though. Audible doing yet another foolish update.

Historia
Single-minded and spoilt, Undine Spragg arrives in New York determined to procure for herself a social status to match her family’s wealth. Ambition, greed and an arresting beauty soon secure her path to marriage...and also to divorce. The Custom of the Country is a sophisticated commentary on both, touching on the implications for a woman of ending a marriage at a time when the author herself was navigating that situation. As the mismatched Undine and Ralph travel to Europe, Wharton contrasts the pecuniary motivation of the nouveau riche in America with European tradition.

Quite Good
Revisado: 05-19-23
If you read the reviews over the many versions on audible, you'll see the main complaints are A) the narrator is weak, or B) Undine is a terrible and narcissistic person, and so they hate the book as a result and give it a poor review. While it's true that the narrator here is a poor choice, and yes, the main character is a selfish and vain creature I still really liked the story. I don't know if Scarlett O'Hara's personality was loosely based on Undine or not, but wow, I kept coming back to the idea.
The ending was of the book was *perfect*, and quite funny in a way because I just wasn't expecting it. Undine Spragg will live out her days ...trading up~

A gorgeous story that needed nothing else to make it more wonderful than it already is, but her narration elevated it to the superb level. A joy to listen to, and I will listen to it many times in the coming years, I'm sure.
