Historia
In 1519 Magellan and his fleet of five ships set sail from Seville, Spain, to discover a water route to the fabled Spice Islands in Indonesia, where the most sought-after commodities (cloves, pepper, and nutmeg) flourished. Three years later, a handful of survivors returned with an abundance of spices from their intended destination, but with just one ship carrying 18 emaciated men. During their remarkable voyage around the world the crew endured starvation, disease, mutiny, and torture. Many men died, including Magellan, who was violently killed in a fierce battle.

Fascinating history
Revisado: 12-02-24
The story is fascinating and the book is well written. However, the narrator was not ideal, in my opinion. He sounds like a cross between Rick Steves and Chuck Schumer.

Well, actually...
Revisado: 11-01-22
I love The Happy Rant podcast. I’ve listened since ep 1. Never missed an ep. I’ve endured a love/hate relationship with a certain one of the trio...love all the banter, the lingo, inside jokes, the takedowns of the ridiculousness of much of church culture.
I had mixed feelings about the book announcement. Like when your favorite tv series is being adapted into a movie, you know it can’t be as magical.
The book was basically like an extended episode, minus the spontaneity and humor, leaving me wondering what required this to be in book form. I understand that because of the back and forth nature of the narrative the authors were required to read their parts but the readings seemed wooden and one of the three’s supposed edginess I’ve never been able to take seriously. I did enjoy the chapter on money and guilt but it wasn’t much new info. The book ended in a very abrupt manner, as well.
Sorry, fellas. Love the podcast and I can’t complain about a free service. For new listeners to The Rant this book may be a good primer without binging on years of podcast episodes.

Historia
At Cold Mountain Penitentiary, the convicted killers on E Block await their turn to walk the Green Mile and keep a date with the electric chair. Paul Edgecombe has seen his share of oddities in his years working as a guard on the Mile, but he's never met anyone like John Coffey.

Great story

The story kept me engaged. The narration was very good but some of the reader’s voice characterizations got a little annoying. All around great, nonetheless.

Historia
In October 1962, when the United States confronted the Soviet Union over its installation of missiles in Cuba, few people shared the behind-the-scenes story as it is told here by the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy. In this unique account, he describes the hour-by-hour negotiations, with particular attention to the actions and views of his brother, President John F. Kennedy. In a foreword to this edition, the distinguished historian and Kennedy adviser Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., discusses the book's enduring importance and the significance of new information about the crisis that has come to light from the former Soviet Union.

RFK’s personal account is fast-paced and sobering. His style is very enjoyable and doesn’t bog down. I do wish his account was longer, it was so interesting.
The afterword was too long-winded, taking a full two hours of the listening time.

Historia
Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Historia
Anti-police media propaganda has created a perception of police shootings that is very different than reality. In 12 exciting, real-life accounts, you will discover that police shootings are extremely complicated, and the consequences are far greater than most can ever imagine. This audiobook shares the story that officers do not get to tell, and it will prepare those who have not yet been forced to pull the trigger.

I’m not a cop but...
Revisado: 04-01-19
I appreciate those who choose this line of work. The accounts in this book illustrate the real life split-second judgements and decisions police officers are called to make, and the consequences.
The subtitle is a bit misleading, I think. From ‘The Psychology Behind..’ I was expecting something more analytical of the mind before, during and after the shootings but the book is only several accounts of shootings and the subsequent struggles the officers had to face: dreams, sleeplessness, alcohol, etc. Regardless, the book was good.

Historia
While singleness is often widely misunderstood by many in the church today and often viewed in negative terms, the Bible speaks about it very differently. This book sets forth a positive vision of singleness by responding to seven common misconceptions, such as the notion that singleness is too hard, requires a special spiritual gift, is a hindrance to ministry, or is a waste of sexuality. Addressed to the church as a whole and written by a single pastor....

Simple and good
Revisado: 03-15-19
I’m glad Sam has added his voice to this topic. I do hope it encourages and challenges many. However, having read many books on singleness and listened to sermons, podcasts, etc on the topic, there’s nothing really new in this book: Singleness is good and challenging. Jesus was single, Paul was single. Use your singleness for others. Build friendships.
I do appreciate that Sam knows by experience what he is stating and that may be the book’s most valuable asset.
The narrator was good.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 07-15-18
The author’s love of his job is very apparent and that is a delight to hear but I found his poetic observations to eventually be too much. The narrator grew tiresome as well and with 4 hours left I set the speed to 1.5 to try to muscle through. I gave up after an hour. Sorry Mark.

Historia
NASA's history is a familiar story, culminating with the agency successfully landing men on the moon in 1969. But NASA's prehistory is a rarely told tale, one that is largely absent from the popular space-age literature but that gives the context behind the incredible lunar program. America's space agency wasn't created in a vacuum; it was assembled from preexisting parts, drawing together some of the best minds the non-Soviet world had to offer.

This is a fascinating back-history of our space age. The author's narrative was not laborious but moved at a good pace. I enjoyed this immensely and look forward to what else Amy will bring in the future!
My only complaint: the narrator's pronunciation of various words would change throughout the book.
