Seriously as a writer trying to break into publishing this was soooo uncomfortable to read. Like having my head held underwear, except the water is liquified Book Twitter. How was it also so engaging that I finished it in 3 days? Kuang is eviscerating, calling out interpersonal and systemic racism, professional jealousy, greed and selfishness, internet trolls, and the culture machine that is Big Publishing. Buckle up because this is a RIDE. I wouldn’t expect any less from Kuang.

What I love about this story is it doesn’t pretend to be what it’s not. It’s simply a sweet queer rom-com that asks Korean media to make space for queer people. There are lots of homages to K-drama and peeks into Korean culture and entertainment business for Western readers. If everything happens to works out in the end and the bad guy gets his due, isn’t that just like a K-drama?

What a gloriously voicey, spectacularly greusome and brilliantly conceived story. Well done, Tamsyn Muir. Long live Gideon Nav!

Shane Burcaw doesn’t just have a gift for story-telling. He has incredible stories to tell. Not the “inspiration porn” so maligned by the disability community, but an insightful tale of learning who you are, finding your place in the world, and learning how to love the people in your life. Who doesn’t want to read that story? Especially when it’s told so poignantly and humorously! Thanks, Shane!
