absolutely amazing
Revisado: 10-03-24
I loved everything about this book. I've read all of Moriarty's books and have loved many but something about this one made it my favorite. It might have been the different passengers stories juxtaposed to Cherry's story and yet all tied together in such a beautiful, surprising way. The writing was also very smart and funny, with observations of human abnormalities and private, intrusive thoughts made normal; something Moriarty is great at, but really seemed to go above and beyond with in this book. Or it could be that I felt connected to all of the characters and wanted to continue hearing from them way after the book was over. All together I don't think I'll be forgetting this book and the way it made me feel!

Great at first...
Revisado: 02-18-23
I loved the first half or so, but once the narrator changed things went downhill. I couldn't wait for it to be over and I kept thinking the end was going to save it. Clearly I didn't pay attention to the other reviews. It abruptly ended after having gone on for so long with a repetitive storyline for Saleem. I loved Sparks like Stars and had such high hopes for this book, but I was greatly disappointed.

A Constellation of Beautiful Words
Revisado: 06-03-21
This is a beautifully written and narrated book. Unlike anything I've ever read or heard of. It follows the extraordinary and tragic lives of characters who are intertwined like the constellations in the night sky. There are some gruesome descriptions of tortures that took place, but it wasn't bad enough to make me stop listening. This book will stay with me forever, and I see myself rereading it several times.

Dream Time
Revisado: 02-08-21
I enjoyed this book. I didn't really care for the main character, but the story that unfolded was interesting and kept me listening. The narrator is great, except for the little girl's voice as mentioned by another reviewer. I could have done without the dream journal entries that had nothing to do with the story, but those were pretty few. I thought the book had a good balance of mystic and realistic themes.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

So many feels
Revisado: 09-09-20
This book is hands down one of the best I have ever experienced. The narration was amazing, and I felt carried away into another time and place. The writing was beautiful, and I believe it will always stay with me. I've never thought I'd listen to an audiobook twice, but this might have just made the exception. I may have to listen every year. There's just so much to unpack and carry with you. Everyone should experience this piece of art.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

Entertaining and informative
Revisado: 07-19-19
I am not normally one to read or listen to nonfiction - but the description of this caught my attention and I am so glad I downloaded it! This book kept my interest, kept me laughing, and kept me telling everyone about it.
As a fifth grade teacher, I can't wait to share this story with my students because there were so many moments perfect for keeping a child's attention. I believe they will love it as much as I did. I learned so much and thanks to the writing style and sound effects, I know I will actually retain historical information (for once!).
I will absolutely be purchasing more of McCormick's work!

Historia
Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. After a messy breakup from her White long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places...including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

Ride the ups and downs
Revisado: 07-11-19
This book started out strong and had me laughing from the opening lines. About halfway through, Queenie's problems seemed very repetitive, but about the time I was losing interest, the story picked back up again. Overall, it was a great read about a strong woman losing herself and figuring out where to go from there. There were many times I found myself laughing along and feeling all the emotions Queenie herself was feeling.
