Required reading prior to attending marriage therapy: to avoid wasting both time, money, and even your soul
Revisado: 08-12-19
I think husbands like me who are brute force analytical problem solvers will benefit the most from this book because the author shows that being honest, especially with yourself, is no easy task, and that nurturing your marriage also take a lot of guts and courage. It’ not something you can accomplish with good check list.
I am reading this a second time, again, on my own. This is probably the best relationship book I have ever read. It helped me to to see what I am doing wrong, what I can correct in my behavior(s)/habits and how to think about my marriage partner and our relationship; how precious it is, how to talk and relate to my spouse of thirty years in new ways.
We have gone to various therapy sessions over the years and I have always felt attacked or that I had gotten beaten up or that the criticism directed towards me was always so hard or painful to accept or was unfair. This book would have helped prepare me to be able to listen to criticism with a lot more compassion and understanding as opposed to reacting to anger with anger or the idea that I am right or being treated unfairly or victimized. My headline for this review was originally, “Get the therapy you need without getting beat up”.
What’s great about this book is that I am able to put into practice and start benefiting from the lessons learned almost immediately. Last, I no longer look at therapy or the suggestion or plea that we go to therapy as something to dread. I feel it would even bring real relief, healing, and growth.
I wish readers all the best.
Godspeed,

Historia
In this endlessly fascinating book, New Yorker columnist James Surowiecki explores a deceptively simple idea that has profound implications: large groups of people are smarter than an elite few, no matter how brilliant. Groups are better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, even predicting the future.

Good information poorly presented and poorly organized
Revisado: 03-26-19
This was hard to listen to as it lacked structure even though it contains valuable information. My interest or bias was towards modern crowdsourcing and the narrative seemed to fixate and focus on the negative aspects of crowd behavior without teaching or showing you how to discern when that is an issue. It reads too much like the typical business management books executives might pick up at an airport bookstore. It did cite a few interesting references but never captured my attention or interest and allow me to enjoy what should be a far more useful and engaging subject. I feel sorry for anyone required to read this. Me, I am a dedicated crowdsourcing nut... -s.

Immediate relief for victims or potential victims of abuse at the hands of toxic personalities
Revisado: 12-31-18
I know! Just in time for the holidays.
I wish I had read this many years ago. This is a must read for everyone who wants to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.
The law enforcement perspective arms you with practical tools to empower you to act immediately and decisively along with other resources and more importantly, how to think about these toxic individuals.
The would be a great gift for anyone, but especially someone suffering or exposed to such individuals.
I wish you all the best. Stay safe out there. This is a matter of life and death. Be prepared!

Revisado: 07-02-18
As good as the old Berlitz tapes which were very well done and also true to the very effective and enjoyable Berlitz technique. I will listen to this recording many times again also. The Audible app lets you skip back just the right amount of time to hear something again making this a really effective portable language learning system. -s

Historia
Between 1846 and 1873, California's Indian population plunged from perhaps 150,000 to 30,000. Benjamin Madley is the first historian to uncover the full extent of the slaughter, the involvement of state and federal officials, the taxpayer dollars that supported the violence, indigenous resistance, who did the killing, and why the killings ended. This deeply researched book is a comprehensive and chilling history of an American genocide.

Loved it. A truth so painful yet necessary to have told. You will never think of California the same afterwards or many of its big names and founders, like Fremont, Hastings, and Stanford, many of whom were worse than the worst Nazis murders and butchers. We are a shame as long as we do so little to right this gross injustice and suppression of the truth. -s.

Historia
In this, the first broad historical overview of labor in the United States in 20 years, Philip Nicholson examines anew the questions, the villains, the heroes, and the issues of work in America. Unlike recent books that have covered labor in the 20th century, Labor's Story in the United States looks at the broad landscape of labor since before the Revolution. Throughout, the audiobook focuses on the integral relationship between the strength of labor and the growth of democracy, painting a vivid picture of the strength of labor movements.

Long, thorough, balanced, painfully truthful
Revisado: 05-02-16
If you want a complete history, this accomplishes that. I listened to the audio book and it was like listening to an entire text book.
I am a unionist and this left me feeling quite down-trodden; but, at the same time, since I am a volunteer and not trained or educated in labor relations, this audio book helped to broaden and fill in the gaps in my knowledge. There are not many audio books on this subject to start with. Hope you find this useful. -s.

Historia
IBM is in serious trouble. Big Blue, as the company is known, tends to rely for its success on magical thinking but that magic ran out a long time ago. The company got in trouble back in the 1990s and had to hire for the first time an outside CEO, Lou Gerstner, to save the day. Gerstner pushed IBM into services with spectacular results but this hurt the company, too. As services have became commoditized IBM could only compete by offshoring the work and quality suffered.

Loved it.
I recommended this to my CIO, my IT labor union, and others.
I feel most sorry my fellow architects who may have recommended IBM products and technologies in the past couple of years. I feel betrayed.
I would loved to talk to the author. I think a prolog should eventually be forthcoming... It is now October 2015 and reality is beginning come home to roost: See "IBM reports Q3 2015 earnings, cuts forecasts" by Julie Bort, Business Insider.
