A brilliantly written fictional account of of a Royal Navy action to rescue British and American nationals from a civil war. The characters are well drawn and the writing is superb - didn't want it to end

Weird, Dark, Different but Good
Revisado: 11-01-15
Hard to put in any pigeon hole - this book is beautifully written and narrated but can be quite dark at times.
Daniel Weyman's voice is an excellent match for the expansive, but not pretentious, use of vocabulary. Our hero? claims to be an English Literature graduate and it reminded me a bit of a darker younger version of a David Lodge book.

More connected short stories than a single novel

Its not terrible, the main character and the stories are interesting but it isnt a single gripping novel like his best can be.

Excellent sequel to Harold Fry
Revisado: 08-04-15
This is NOT an action thriller it is a quiet English book about quiet British people making their way in life (and death) - at times it is very sad but also has many good one liners from the characters in the Hospice.
A lovely narration really helps this be a good listen.
You probably want to listen to Harold Fry by the same author first but that isn't necessary.

Good story - perhaps too abridged
Revisado: 08-04-15
A well written and narrated novel set around the Spanish Civil war. It explains a little of the history and atmosphere at the time in the natural flow of the story.
Nicely narrated and an easy listen it is perhaps too harshly abridged when compared with Dominion by the same author on Audible that was much better as unabridged.

Historia
In the dark winter of 1917, as World War I was deadlocked, Britain knew that Europe could be saved only if the United States joined the war. But President Wilson remained unshakable in his neutrality. Then, with a single stroke, the tool to propel America into the war came into a quiet British office. One of countless messages intercepted by the crack team of British decoders, the Zimmermann telegram was a top-secret message from Berlin inviting Mexico to join Japan in an invasion of the United States.

Great story but not an easy listen
Revisado: 08-04-15
This history is packed with characters and twists and turns, being an ignorant geek I had never heard of this episode of history, the incompetence of the diplomats and the poor strategy of both the German military and the American president offset against the surprising competence and efficiency of the codebreakers in room 40.
It is a hard listen as it needed to be read a little more slowly to allow the dense information in the story to be absorbed. Still worth the effort as it explained a lot to this ignoramus.

Historia
The Great Smog. London. A dense, choking fog engulfs the city and beneath it, history is re-written…1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany after Dunkirk. As the long German war against Russia rages on in the east, the British people find themselves under dark authoritarian rule: the press, radio and television are controlled; the streets patrolled by violent auxiliary police and British Jews face ever greater constraints.

In May 1940 the meeting between Halifax Chamberlain and Churchill really did have a slightly surprising outcome - Churchill formed the government - despite the King and much of the Conservative party favouring Halifax - this what if book looks at what would have happened if the meeting had gone the other way.My real life great uncle (a member of the war cabinet) is killed in this book!

Revisado: 05-19-11
It took a few minutes to get into, but this tale of a late night radio presenter in London has been the best book I have read / listened to all year-
It takes a little while to establish the main characters but rapidly you care about their outcome in a slightly odd and unpredictable story.
