Historia
When smart-aleck, down-on-his-luck bounty hunter Anderson Gunn snags his next job, he’s just happy to get the gig. The target he’s chasing may be wanted for murder, but his bills aren’t going to pay themselves. As it turns out, he probably should've been more selective. When he tracks down Cameron Kovak, the wanted man turns out to be no man at all. Gunn finds himself face to face with a tentacled creature out of Ridley Scott’s worst nightmare - a baby Cthulhu, wearing his target's skin like a onesie. And that's just the start of it.

Tongue and Cheek Daylight Scifi Mystery
Revisado: 04-08-20
For this book, I got to try whispersync, where you can read the book and then use Audible to pick up where you left off. It's very convenient and I find that I actually read much faster. From the audio side, Oliver Wyman does a fantastic job of bringing the snark of Anderson Gunn to life. My only qualm was with the way Dyna is played, it's like a rigid C3po, and that was tough to get over. She comes across as stiff, but not completely lifeless in the books. He does the rest of the aliens plenty of justice.
From my amazon Review: If you're willing to suspend believe and looking for a lighthearted, fun sci-fi reprieve from being stuck indoors, this is the a story for you. If you can't get over things Jack Bauer driving across LA in an hour episode of 24, then this book may also frustrate you in the plausibility department.
After reading several of Herron's books, he has dialed in a enjoyable blend of pop-culture tropes and familiar setups into a humorous take on the MIB-esque private detective world. In the heat of Austin, there's not as much black suit stylish flair in a dense city while wearing sunglasses, as there is gruff, breakfast tacos, and the need to pay the bills. This isn't a four course meal, this is a toasted deli sandwich that Herron puts just a little something extra when we weren't looking.
One of the things I really enjoyed is how the location of Austin is treated almost like a character in the story. It's given enough weight that the locations that Anderson Gunn trash talks and traverses is way through with a smirk feel real. The rain and trench coat has been swapped out for bright Texas heat, and gives a unique feel that is more modern. It's not a very dense novel, and there is clearly a larger lore at play.I f you're willing to go with it, enjoy a fun ride, and discover what really lies hidden in plain sight.

Historia
What’s in a label? Are we the product of our upbringing or do we have a natural propensity towards good or evil? The eternal question of nature vs nurture is at the centre of Dr Diane Buckley’s world. A talented freelance forensic psychologist who has never quite found the key to engaging with people on a casual level, she is drafted in to examine a grisly murder – a body found in a children’s playground.

Great Characters, Stupid Choices
Revisado: 01-15-20
This is a fantastic Audible entry, and very well produced. It's a somewhat by the numbers crime procedural, that dives into the main characters hubris and home life.
It does have a tracking flaw in the first few episodes as it gets somewhat hard to follow the minor character storylines, but this tightens up around the 4th chapter.
it's a compelling story about criminal profiling, but ultimately succumbs to the folly of many procedurals, stupid decision making and choices. This was really a fun listen, and I was craving to know the ending.

A Thrilling Sci-fi Ride
Revisado: 01-29-19
I read the first book in the Translocator series, and dove into the second one but never finished. I'm a slow reader, but I can plow through podcasts and audiobooks. I was very excited to revist this world with the new release of all three books combined into an audiobook.
Like the few other of Herron's work's I've read, the Translocator series has a steady diet of influence from various movies and media that's fun to pick up on, but clearly makes this story stand on it's own. The journey starts in the modern real world, but then takes off, and makes no qualms to remind you that this is fiction, and you're going on a fun ride. Rakulo, Eliana, and Amon feel like real people, and it' easy to track along. There's a good balance between action pacing and technical explanation, as often once I find myself asking, "Hey what about," it usually almost immediately answered in the story soon after.
The audiobook is absolutely fantastic. The narrator brings a new level of depth to this story, and seems to have decent range of voices that is very believable. In the first book, she really paints out the use of foreign language so well I was sad there wasn't more of it. To me, listening to the new version really makes me visualize "the Hopper" as it's called and the mystery of Eliana discovering the nature of Kakul.
