Historia
Welcome to Anoka, Minnesota, a small city just outside of the Twin Cities dubbed “The Halloween Capital of the World” since 1937. Here before you lie several tales involving bone collectors, pagan witches, werewolves, skeletal bison, and cloned children. It is up to you to decipher between fact and fiction as the author has woven historical facts into his narratives.

Eye Opening Stories of Human Horror
Revisado: 12-08-24
This is an eye opening collection of short stories that within the supernatural elements tell a true horror situation. That being the constant fear, indignity and persistent reminder of truth not realized . I came away from this with a greater appreciation and respect for Indigenous reality.

Historia
Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge.

Historia
In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir. A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved. Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them.

Refreshing and Honest
Revisado: 10-26-24
Unlike a lot of memoirs which tend to be self serving, narcissistic narratives, this was refreshing and honest. You get a rare glimpse in what growing up and living with Elvis was like. The narration by Riley Keough and Julia Robert’s was at times confusing but otherwise this is an excellent read.

Historia
New Orleans, 1853. A young exile named Benito Juárez disembarks at a fetid port city at the edge of a swamp. Years later, he will become the first indigenous head of state in the postcolonial Americas, but now he is as anonymous and invisible as any other migrant to the roiling and alluring city of New Orleans. Accompanied by a small group of fellow exiles who plot their return and hoped-for victory over the Mexican dictatorship, Juárez immerses himself in the city, which absorbs him like a sponge.

Disappointing interpretation
Revisado: 10-21-24
I’m not a fan of most fiction and especially historical ones. This is a good example of why. It would have been a good interpretation of what influenced Benito Juarez during the 18 months spent in New Orleans before returning to Mexico. But all we get here is a fictional crime romp. There is no actual account of what he experienced but there are better books to read to understand the mindset of this historical hero and patriot of Mexico. I suggest checking out “Benito Juarez “ by Patricia Galeana ( in both Spanish and English ), and “A Life of Benito Juarez “ by Ulick Ralph Burke.

Historia
In 1850, an impoverished twenty-five-year-old named Fredericka Mandelbaum came to New York in steerage and worked as a peddler on the streets of Lower Manhattan. By the 1870s she was a fixture of high society and an admired philanthropist. How was she able to ascend from tenement poverty to vast wealth? In the intervening years, “Marm” Mandelbaum had become the country’s most notorious “fence”—a receiver of stolen goods—and a criminal mastermind.

An unimpressive biography
Revisado: 10-13-24
It’s an interesting story about a notorious crime boss but the presentation was simplistic and parts of this were mediocre. On some chapters the narrator just rambled on emotionlessly. On those chapters it was both boring and dry.

Historia
Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself.

This is a remarkable and engaging biography that seeks and succeeds in portraying the very human aspects of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The narrative and pace is infectious and I found it hard to stop listening and didn't want to stop.

Montaro Caine, CEO of the Fitzer Corporation, is losing control of the company he built just as his teenage daughter is experiencing her own difficulties. At this moment of crisis, a man and woman appear at his office with a coin of unknown provenance, composed of a metal unknown on Earth. Montaro immediately recognizes it as the companion of a coin he analyzed as a graduate student working in a lab at MIT, which was later returned to its unidentified owner. The coin's appearance draws the attention of scientists, collectors, financiers, and thieves, all of whom vie to get their hands on it....

I really looked forward to this based on my admiration for Sidney Poitier but the story is underwhelming and average in plot and content. I really struggled to finish it.
