Historia
Harley Merlin can sense people's emotions, among other things. It's how she snagged her first job pinpointing cheaters at a casino. But she has no clue where she got these freakish powers because she spent her childhood jumping from home to home in the foster system, and her father left her with nothing more than a cryptic note. Then she crosses paths with a terrifyingly real monster. Which is when a mysterious and annoyingly arrogant young warlock named Wade Crowley steps in, introducing her to a hidden world of beasts, magicals, and covens riddled with secrets.

Narrator needs to learn pronunciation
Revisado: 06-03-18
What should have been a good listen was made unappealing due to the narrator. Rather monotone, pauses in the wrong places during sentences and horrible pronunciation (and no, it wasn't just an accent thing).
I will continue with the series as it seems a light, easy read but it won't be through Audible.
Story-wise, it isn't the best Steampunk I have read.

Annoying narration
Revisado: 02-07-16
Any additional comments?
New to both the author and narrator, I found the story to be a so-so historic romance - the type you read on a beach or a plane when you don't particularly care if you get interrupted or even if you don't get to finish the book.
Really didn't enjoy the accent of the Narrator and pronounciation of certain words.
Wouldn't listen to either this author or this Narrator again by choice.

Two minds about the Narrator
Revisado: 02-07-16
What didn’t you like about Brad Wills’s performance?
On one hand, the narration was very well done with great accents, different character voices and tone / pace that matched the story exactly. However, this was also at times extremely frustrating.
I know the Scottish have varying degrees of brogues and that some of them you can barely understand. However, that meant that whenever several characters 'spoke' I couldn't understand what was being said due to the very thick brogue that the Narrator used.
During the tale there were several occasions when the characters were creeping around to avoid detection. At those times the narration became extremely quiet for the narrative and spoken sections - so quiet that you had to adjust the volume. Which made it very loud when the scene was finished and you weren't quick enough to re-adjust the volume again.
Now, if these two incidents had only happened once or twice I could handle it but it was multiple occasions throughout the story. Which eventually got annoying.
Any additional comments?
Another early historic Scottish romance that follows a very similar pattern of Suzan Tisdale's other novels set in the same era. If you enjoy them you will enjoy this. No requirement to read in order, although the characters are somewhat inter-related between the novels.
If, however, you like some historic reality in your historic romance than avoid not only this book but her others as well. Hygiene, living conditions, speed of movement, fight scenes, values and beliefs were all given poetic license by the author which to be honest made the book more enjoyable for the most part. Imagining kissing scenes when you know that toothpaste and bathing weren't part of normal daily routines in the 1300's makes it a little difficult to enjoy the romance.
Enjoyed it enough to download the text versions for the remainder of the Series (I started with this one) but couldn't handle another audio experience.

Too slow, lead heroine too whiny
Revisado: 07-26-15
What disappointed you about Magic Lost, Trouble Found?
I was very disappointed in this as I had high hopes based on other reviews but I just couldn't get into the story. I found Raine Benares to be an uninspiring lead; she was mediocre in her life and her magic skills but all of a sudden when trouble comes she turns into some super-fighting, tactically aware wonder. I am sorry, but the increase in magic skills is explained but not anything else. You don't go from only ever using your fighting skills in practice and threats (while not explicitly stated, given her lack-luster level of magic skills and humdrum life, it was apparent she isn't fighting bad guys every day) to being able to fight skills warriors to the death without nary a scratch.
I guess what I really couldn't stand most of all was how whiny Raine sounded. It might have been all inner dialogue (but boy was there a lot of that) but it got on my nerves around 3 chapters in. Listening to the audio version rather than reading this was the only way I got through the entire book - if I had to be the one turning the pages the book would have disappeared very quickly.
For what should have been a fast-paced, action filled story (the entire book takes place over the course of less than a week) it just seemed to drag on. I blame that on too much of 'what Raine is thinking right now' rather than focus on 'what is actually going on with the action'.
Would you ever listen to anything by Lisa Shearin again?
I note some of the previous comments about the narrator and while I didn't find her compelling, she was no worse than what my own voice sounds like in my head when I am reading a story so it was acceptable to me.

Listening is definately better than reading
Revisado: 01-21-15
Any additional comments?
I had purchased the audio book during a random 'special sale' but despite the blurb sounding interesting enough it has still taken me 6 months to get around to listening. What a waste, I could have been through more of the series if I had got stuck into the first book earlier.
Firstly, I don't think I would have enjoyed this even half as much if it hadn't been audio. There is a LOT of jewish words which I would have skipped over in written form and the narrator had brilliant incantonation (hmm, not sure if that is the correct word) which really gave me a feel for the different Jewish characters and how they speak.
My knowledge of Jewdism (?) extends to some basic knowledge of WWII and the portrayal of Kyle from South Park. However, my knowledge of other religions is only marginally better and I am a firm atheist so I was originally a little worried that the religious context of this story would not be to my liking.
I was very pleasantly surprised. The mystery component of the story is made interesting by the very nature of the insular community in which the crimes have occurred but I do admit that I just can't see Decker converting to Orthodox Jew but maybe that is because I certainly can't see the point in all the rules even if you do believe in God. However, given there are over 20 books in the series I guess it must happen eventually. I am glad that the book concentrated more on the crime and solving the crime than the romance between Peter and Rina even if the police procedures were rather lite-on. I don't really like either character that much. Rina to me is an oppressed pious religious woman following archaic laws (my view) because she feels that brings her closer to god or something. I am more of the 'if you enjoy something and it doesn't hurt anyone then there is nothing wrong with' that point of view. Although every now and again she feels frustrated by the constraints of her religion she then feels guilty for those thoughts. Gag! Decker is only a couple of years older than I am and his physical description sounds very unappealing - yep, I am marginally superficial. Gag on the moustache. His attitudes towards women, emotions, gender roles would annoy the hell out of me if I ever met him.
I do find it enjoyable to read books written in the mid-80's; the smoking, the moustaches (I can't stop hearing 80's porn music whenever the 'mo gets mentioned), the lack of smart phones and other IT. Makes me glad I live in the 21st century.
So, despite not really connecting to either lead character I am eager to delve into book 2. Will see how much further I get into the series though as at $12 an audio book I won't keep investing unless I can get some emotional investment in Decker and Rina.
