The inclusion of the rats…
Revisado: 04-08-25
Not that the story was in any way original, I just grew to liking the characters. Gus, Buckle and couple others. I didnt like that Tenner was able to walk through the rats unscathed. They could clear a corpse in seconds but yet he was in a tunnel and took no damage whatsoever…come’ on man!!!!
Gus is a truly likeable character despite all his flaws. Hard not to ride with him for both his highs and lows. Interesting twist with the cross species aspect….nice addition all things considered. The whole getting bailed out while Amy did all the work against Fist was expected. His “extreme luck” is disconcerting, survived as long as he did without having to kill a single living person?!?!
Not sure if Ill listen any further, if the later books come in sets I’d be more inclined to buy than the single titles. I love the narration and though some of the voices sounded a little similar, I think they were nuanced enough to make their being different more believable. Nice job there.

Strange…yet captivating
Revisado: 03-27-25
I listened this based on a recommendation from an older friend who thought I’d like it after her 2nd read. I’m currently about to finish year 25 of my teaching career and though times have changed, I can sadly admit that not much has changed by way of the state of the Dept of Education. It’s still sink or swim for new teachers, most admin hand down mandates from on high that they truly don’t understand and teachers are still expected to work miracles when the academic levels of their packed classes are all over the place. I too have sad stories of students I’ve lost, I am also thankful for social media as it allows me to see the progress of those who are making their way in the world. Like Frank reiterated, you won’t reach them all but for those you do…it will mean the world. Thank you Mr. McCourt for sharing your life’s story. I always thought about whether I would or not but after reading your book, I see that I should write two.

Just wanted to get to the end….
Revisado: 03-09-25
Gonna need a thesaurus there bud. Everything cant be a “snarl” or “through gritted teeth” or how everyone doesn’t want to look at something but can’t help it…. Also, why introduce some 7ft creature and then not bring it up 2.5 books later? Only one person is aware of it (maybe) but doesnt seem to care to even share with the info with anyone. Too many of these characters dont seem to have any will to live. Common sense is just gone. Yes…its not common at all but come on… I love the varierty of the characters and the ease of following their stories we could definitely do without some.

What’s worse, their mind is wiped clean, replaced with a vicious urge to kill anyone within reach. Mark is at work when it happens. Fighting not to fall asleep, the boring department meeting suddenly turns into a bloodbath when people are drawn to the windows to look up at the sky.

Good but redundant in parts…
Revisado: 02-03-25
I regret buying the compilation instead oc just the initial book. The first one was fine but then hearing the same characters freeze up and refuse to acknowledge what they know to be true is annoying. They froze up at every turn. The characters know the “ghosts” they see aren’t real yet they get frozen with fear whenever one appears to them. Every single one. Then it was Fritz not hearing the voices anymore but then still having the telekinesis at the most convenient moments The drag of the crack this, the crack that… just became cumbersome. There could have been some explanation (even if not in great detail, about how Fritz’s father opened the portal in the first place. Then out of nowhere, the inclusion of teleportation and seemingly, possession….Id write audible for a refund if I could but at least the ending didnt suck and I was happy that many of them survived (although not unscathed). Despite my gripes, Id recommend the read.

The survivors of the Monktree, Wyoming Motorcycle Rally find themselves stuck in an entirely new world. With no signs of help headed their way, our survivors decide to head to the nearest town, Casper, Wyoming. Only trouble is, Casper is in worse condition than Monktree, and the walking dead aren’t the only danger they have to be wary of.

Love the concept….
Revisado: 10-24-24
I love the idea of the story following normal everyday untrained people, however, I dislike that common sense always seems to rear its head continuously. Anytime there’s a chance for someone to make a mistake, we can count on it happening. I love the interactions and how the relationships emerge based on the characters being thrust together in desperate times. Reminds me of a Netflix show called Black Summer (wish there was a 2nd season). Despite my gripes, I did/do enjoy the series and am rooting for Jiyamma and Taro. I knew the cop wasn’t going to last from the start, he definitely didnt have the necessary apocalyptic demeanor to survive in such a world. Anyhow, hopefully there are follow ups….

Gripes…
Revisado: 10-01-24
Having all the unassuming characters survive instead of the perceived leaders/heroes is definitely not anything new. While I agree that things shouldnt be super easy, there doesnt have to bs around every corner either. Having both Walt and Whiteside get struck by lightning….really?!?!
The zombies are attracted by sound but then having some of them ignore sounds that they do hear is super contradictory. This is even moreso annoying when it occurs even when the characters havent been spotted by ani’s yet. In those instances, characters cant throw an object to make noise in order to give themselves a few secs to escape while the anis investigate???
Then the tsunami….yes, Oregon has earthquakes but most are below a 3.0 and that wouldnt be strong enough to cause the devastation that occurred in this part of the story.
Also, I hope you don’t go the hybrid route with Stranger. She should either die early or be a carrier of some sort. There should be no way that Kate was infected and carried her as long as she did without having passed something on.
I plan to continue listening to the series because (momma didn’t raise no quitter) and because I want to see what else I can gripe about.
Jk on that last part…

Why kill off the interesting characters??
Revisado: 09-19-24
Trying to decide if I should even bother listening to the next book as all the characters I wanted to root for have gotten killed off. Zeke, Lou and even Mort’s friend. Why should Rudy, Andy or Amanda beat out any of the others???
On a positive note, Im a fan of a good zombie apocalypse and this definitely fit the bill. Having worked in Portland while actually living across the street from Nike WHQ in the town homes they described, I was hit my by the nostalgia of hearing the familiar names. Having visited the campus and going to all the buildings due to (now my ex) having worked there, I could picture it all. I had driven across the Burnside bridge plenty of times. The authenticity of the locations were a plus.
Two additional items of note are the fact that I wish their were some indication provided as to the cause of the outbreak. I wish the author had gotten creative with some plausible way for how it all began.
