I’m so relieved these stories narrated by Stephen Fry are now available in the U.S. I’ve been addicted to the Harry Potter series and movies since they were first released. When the 20th anniversary documentary came out and I got to hear the narration by Fry, I hoped I might someday buy the discs one by one second-hand through eBay. Now I won’t have to. I’m buying each one by one every couple of weeks here on Audible to pace myself so I don’t burn through my paychecks. I don’t have to worry about scratching discs now. I listen to the audiobooks at work and while I do house-chores. In between books, I listen to the Super Carlin Brothers channel “Through The Griffin Door” to hear theories on various tidbits mentioned in the story. They catch a lot that I’ve missed in spite of the countless times I’ve been through these books and movies. These are my daily treats to myself and help me get through the monotony of each day. Thanks, Audible, for getting these audiobooks for Americans. We appreciate it.

I love getting to hear Fry narrate this story without having to use some overseas app or some other complicated setup to do it. He characterizes everyone so thoroughly that I can visualize the story clearly. I’m so glad Audible now has these available for those of us in the U.S. I couldn’t recommend this version more. Thanks, Audible!

I’m reading the A&O series now to get the full Mercy Thompson World experience, but :-\ I really see the difference between the two sets of books. Mercy gives me moments of frustration where I’m screaming at her “call him!” or “tell him!”. Anna and Charles send me into fits of “gah!” and a lot of heavy eye rolling. I get that Anna has gone through a lot of abuse. Truly! I can relate due to less severe experiences of my own. But I truly hate that this character doesn’t have the kickaxxness of Mercy. Mercy is resistant even when she’s under compulsion and facing opposition. I also hated how quickly Anna and Charles fell in love and then wondered why they didn’t have this bond they were expecting. That’s not realistic. Yes, I know this is a fantasy series, but stories have to have a certain level of “realisticness” to continue suspending the reader. There were too many moments where I separated from the story and was fully aware I was reading/listening to a book. The imagery is always great with Briggs’ stories, and I love her plots, but ultimately I found myself getting through this book just to get the backstories of these characters and to see what was going on outside of the Mercy books. I will continue with the A&O series, but I do hope the relationships and how fast they develop become more realistic.
