Dr. Sam Anderson is one of the most celebrated scientists in history. Ten years ago, he invented a device that changed the world forever. Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Story ok narration horrible
Revisado: 03-12-23
Story content held my interest most of the time but I was irritated by the narrator. MS Jennings spoke with little to no difference in the various characters. Her inflection was repetitive and often distracting. I doubt that I will listen to Ms Jennings again.

Offred, now a Handmaid tasked with the singular role of procreation in the childless household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife, can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost everything, even her own name.

Wait! It Mightn't Be What You Think--
- De Gillian en 04-05-17
Frightening, worrisome and prophetic
Revisado: 10-24-22
The fact that this novel was written in 1984 adds a frightening tone reading it today, given the current political climate in the USA. All things are possible! Could we be headed down a similar path? Ms Atwood has written a profound "tale" that should be read by all. The writing style has been described as halting by some reviewers but seems to me at realistic flow of someone speaking in a recording. Claire Danes gives a realistic and a great performance to Ofred's voice, that of a woman living a repressed, rigid existence in a purely patriarchal society.
I cannot recommend this book enough and should be on a student reading list. "Forewarned is For-armed".

Historia
Lina Meisel, a retired librarian in Florida, is reading the newspaper one morning when she freezes. Her eyes lock on a photograph of a book she hasn’t seen in 65 years - a book she recognizes as The Book of Lost Names. The accompanying article discusses the looting of libraries by the Nazis across Europe during World War II - an experience Lina remembers well - and the search to reunite people with the texts stolen from them so long ago. The book in the photograph is one of the most fascinating cases.

A story Of courage, resilience and survival.
Revisado: 07-14-22
We are not truly gone as long as there is one person who remembers .
The human spirit will triumph over hate.
We must never forget.
This is a novel of perseverance and hope in the face of the worst man can inflict on a fellow human being. Written with interwoven threads of hope, despair, love and !oss,
Ms Harmel has shown a light on the goodness of our species in the face of evil. Character development was a bit weak at times and the narrator could have shown more variation in voices. Overall I enjoyed and recommend this book.

Historia
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

OMG........powerful & poignant
Revisado: 07-30-21
This is the story of perseverance, a story of the indomitable spirit to survive. Though it takes place during the great depression and the long hard years of the dust bowl and it's migration of people to California, it is a story that in some ways is very much alive today. The Pandemic that we are living through today is a tragedy and loss of global proportions, asking each of us to dig deep into ourselves to find our personal strength not unlike Elsa. In creating her narrative , Ms. Hannah has fleshed out her characters with tenderness and insight that brings them alive no matter what decade they're placed in. It is a story of strong women holding their families together despite all odds. It is a powerful story, a relative story and one that should not be missed. I very very highly recommend this book.

The story took a bit to get started tho this wasn't distracting. Twist & turns in the story line kept my interest. The characters were richly textured by the deft narration of Ms McKenzie including changing voices and accents thus adding authenticity to the characters.

Interesting story, compelling characters. Narration was well done with good inflection and character distinction. The actual writing took a bit getting used to as flashbacks were interwoven throughout the book. I do recommend this recording/nove!.
