Just when I thought I had it figured out, I found out I was wrong. Great characters. As always, fabulous narration by Saskia.

Just ok
Revisado: 12-10-23
As many others mentioned, the storyline itself was not all that engaging. The references to events in Cuba, however, were quite interesting. The voices of the two narrators were not different enough to really warrant using two different narrators. I do not think I will be downloading the rest of the series.

Agree with many that the ending came up short
Revisado: 02-04-22
I loved this book up until the last chapters, which left too many hanging threads. I felt like Towles ran out of time to finish the book, as the ending for each character's story was truncated and in some cases felt inconsistent with the personality that he took so long to develop.
Totally recommend this book, but do wish more had been done with the finish.

Awful narrtion
Revisado: 01-08-22
I cannot comment on the story itself, but the narrator is just awful. I deleted this book after 20 minutes of her sing-song, barely believable attempt at a Southern accent. It grated my last nerve raw.

Historia
In the deep woods of East Texas, Henry supports his family by selling bootleg liquor. It's all he can do to keep his compassionate but ailing mother and his stepfather - a fanatical grassroots minister with a bruising rhetoric - from ruin. But they have no idea they've become the obsession of the girl in the woods. Andoned and nearly feral, Eve has been watching them, seduced by the notion of family - something she's known only in the most brutal sense. Soon she can't resist the temptation to get close.

An engrossing listen, hard at times but worth it
Revisado: 04-08-18
Well-developed characters in an entwined tale of pain, redemption and more pain. There were parts of this story that were emotionally difficult and yet left me unable to turn away. The narrator enhanced the tale with his presentation. Highly recommend.

Too long and too predictable
Revisado: 03-01-18
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book, when "girl" was still a girl. The glimpse into a culture I didn't know existed was fascinating. Without spoiling anything, once she got older and more "experienced" I just started getting bored. The whole US branch of the story was a snooze and the ending was just ridiculous. Sorry Lisa See. I loved Snow Flower, but you lost me with this one
