Historia
In Dead Man's Walk, Gus and Call are not yet 20, young men coming of age in the days when Texas was still an independent republic. Enlisting as Texas Rangers under a land pirate who wants to seize Santa Fe from the Mexicans, Gus and Call experience their first great adventure in the barren great plains landscape, in which arbitrary violence is the rule -- whether from nature, or from the Indians whose territory they must cross in order to reach New Mexico.<

A prequel that still keeps you guessing
Revisado: 12-21-24
Getting the back story for two characters is a hard task given you know they will live. McMurty artfully spun this yarn in a way that you eventually forget they'll make it, and become engrossed in the adventure and danger of it all.

Good audio, but might need the physical book
Revisado: 09-24-24
If you're like me and can't sit down to devote time on textbook like information the audio book may be the way to go. I never would have made it through reading this and consequently wouldn't have gained the insight it offered. With that said, it may now be worth buying a physical copy to go back and reference some of the more technical information in the future. Great book with great insights.

Historia
The final book of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove tetralogy is an exhilarating tale of legend and heroism. Captain Woodrow Call, August McCrae's old partner, is now a bounty hunter hired to track down a brutal young Mexican bandit. Riding with Call are an Eastern city slicker, a witless deputy, and one of the last members of the Hat Creek outfit, Pea Eye Parker, now married to Lorena -- once Gus McCrae's sweetheart. This long chase leads them across the last wild streches of the West....

Excellent Sequel
Revisado: 07-04-24
If you listened to Lonesome Dove, this is an excellent followup. even if it has been a while, McMutry does sufficient explaining so you're not lost on any characters mentioned from Lonesome Dove.

Historia
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

Like an NPR tale to nowhere
Revisado: 06-26-24
I listened out of curiosity since so much credit seems to be attributed to this book. It is written like a poem disguised as a memoir with the truth of a novel. The intent seems less to inform and more to convey a feeling. Maybe the feeling of a generation, but I found it more the feeling of this singular author who has wrapped his whole identity around Vietnam and just wants someone to see him so he has purpose. You decide.

Before listening to this book if you would have told me there was anything interesting about Ohio or that it had any significance in our westward expansion I wouldn't have believed it. Now I know better.

Exciting book. Leaves you guessing.
Revisado: 06-16-24
Klavan created a realistic person with flaws and faults that drives the story forward. He does a great job of spinning the story so you don't know what will happen next and leaves you guessing right up to the end. The only thing missing is more "E"s in Klavan.

Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Not for the touchy
Revisado: 05-29-24
I looked up when this was first released (2008) and was surprised how relevant it was to the things going on today. Klavan always has just enough light-heartedness in his novels to make them fun in the face of the obscurity of life. If you miss the sarcasm you're probably a miserable person. It could use more Es in "Klavan" though.
