For decades, Charlie Flagg has eked out a living by raising cattle and sheep on his modest Texas ranch. Hardworking and old-fashioned, he distrusts federal programs that claim to help struggling farmers and ranchers. Historia
Theodore Dalrymple, a British psychiatrist who treats the poor in a slum hospital and a prison in England, has seemingly seen it all. Yet in listening to and observing his patients, he is continually astonished by the latest twist of depravity that exceeds even his own considerable experience. Dalrymple's key insight in Life at the Bottom is that long-term poverty is caused not by economics, but by a dysfunctional set of values, one that is continually reinforced by an elite culture searching for victims.

Really quite good!
Revisado: 02-24-23
Dr. Dalrymple outlines the cultural rot that Liberal policies have created in England, tracing issues to widely held beliefs in academia. The frightening thing is these individuals (intellegensia) will never admit wrong and change course.
He describes the entrenched mindset and how it plays out in individuals lives – and especially noted, how destructive it is manifesting in severe violence towards women.
The narration is quite good, and the author injects (dry) humor throughout, which if he didn’t the content would be nearly unbearable as it’s so tragic.

Historia
Following a remarkable epoch of greater dispersion of wealth and opportunity, we are inexorably returning towards a more feudal era marked by greater concentration of wealth and property, reduced upward mobility, demographic stagnation, and increased dogmatism. If the last 70 years saw a massive expansion of the middle class, not only in America but in much of the developed world, today that class is declining and a new, more hierarchical society is emerging. The new class structure resembles that of Medieval times.

Oh, how our world is sliding into a soft totalitarianism. The author does an excellent job of outlining just how bad things are, and how they could be turned around.
Really well written, and the narrator was quite good as well.

Historia
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

SUPREME!!!
Revisado: 11-03-22
This book, and the narration which brought it to life, is one of the best biography's I have listened to. And to top that, on such an important, pivotal figure to Western Culture; Winston Churchill.
Those who are obsessed with the "perfect politician" or leader, would do well to consume this work (and others such as bio's on Abraham Lincoln) to learn just what's really important in a true, great, leader of people - their complexities, their faults, and where they excelled.
The narrator is fabulous, and does a brilliant job of sounding just like WC in many of the direct quotes!
Of all the 60+ audible books in my library, this is in the top 3.
Get it. Listen to it - especially in this era where history is being subject to such distortion.

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills 3,000 years of the history of power into 48 well-explicated laws. This bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other infamous strategists. The 48 Laws of Power will fascinate any listener interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.

Returning
Revisado: 04-25-22
I was intrigued by this book after the author was interviewed by Jordan Peterson. I remember the author seemingly downplaying the Power element to make it more palatable; (my paraphrase) as a book for all to navigate our relationships.
The disturbing parts to me were on Power as the absolute endgame: excusing, promoting sheer malevolence to others that are in our path to power's way.
I am a Christian. Christ is titled in both testaments as the "King of Kings', and again "Lord of Lords". Both those titles describe ultimate power, wouldn't it make sense to quote him if this title was ascribed? To compare what he said to some of the things in this work?
The final straw for me was the quoting of the passage in the Old Testament of David and Bathsheeba, as a power play. What wasn't included in the book is the absolute disaster this was for David's reign - the "sword' ran through even his family as well as the baby from their tryst dies, as soon as it was born.
I loved many of the old fables and stories from ancient cultures but I just couldn't stomach what I saw as the way to plow over others on your grab for power.
Most of the current political problems in leadership in America stem from a party craving power, regardless of the constituency they're supposed to represent.

The mutiny on HMS Bounty, in the South Pacific on 28 April 1789, is one of history's truly great stories - a tale of human drama, intrigue and adventure of the highest order - and in the hands of Peter FitzSimons it comes to life as never before. Commissioned by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies, the Bounty's crew found themselves in a tropical paradise. Five months later, they did not want to leave.

AMAZING!! Great Writing, Story, Narration
Revisado: 02-01-22
I've collected over 80+ titles in Audible over the years. There are a few books that stand up and above all of them - this is one. The drama, the twists of the story, it was truly gripping, really very hard to put down at times - which I think is more difficult in a audio version, vs print.
The true story, re-written by this famous Australian author, has been thoroughly researched, uncovering things that prior books on the Mutiny of the Bounty missed. The heck of it is, the author just brings the whole cast of characters alive in a way that only great authors can.
Hats off to the narrator who's command of different dialects and accents was amazing. What a difference a great narrator makes (put him up with George Guidal).

Historia
A deeply divided nation. Vicious politics. A shamelessly partisan media. A president loathed by half the populace. Smuggling and gang warfare along the Mexican border. Armed citizens willing to stand their ground and take law into their own hands.... That was America in 1881. All those forces came to bear on the afternoon of October 26, when Doc Holliday and the Earp brothers faced off against the Clantons and the McLaurys in Tombstone, Arizona. It should have been a simple misdemeanor arrest.

Very good! Surprising depth and historical detail
Revisado: 09-29-21
I've always wondered why the Shootout at the OK Corral captured the American imagination so much, now I understand.
Mary Doria Russell's outstanding writing covers so much detail, and in an engaging way. After reading this I took the figure of Wyatt Earp as a tragic man, who with his brothers and Doc Holiday, were trying to enforce law while being constantly thrown under the bus by corrupt superiors and politicians. A bit comparable to today's police force with the BLM movements.
The unexpected treat was the author following Wyatt Earp to the end of his life, with the latter events seemingly cementing his overall tragic existence. And additionally... all written from a woman's perspective – not an easy feat for such a male-centered time and event.
The narrator was quite good, although some of the men sounded a bit like boys (LOL), but that was excusable.
I highly recommend this listen/book.

Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States has sold over 2.5 million copies and is still required reading in some high school and college classrooms. But its polemic rewriting of American history as a story of oppression is an agenda-driven fairy tale that has no place in academia. In Debunking Howard Zinn, Mary Grabar debunks Howard Zinn’s lies and traces the damage his mega-bestseller has done to American education, culture, and politics.

AMERICAN TRAITOR
Revisado: 08-21-21
This book ought to be glued to every copy of a Peoples History of the United States.
This man has done more damage to this country than can be imagined. From K-12 to university teaching, his distortions have generated probably much of the violence we've seen with the recent riots and the baffling American self-hate.
Having gone to school prior to the 80s I always wondered why so many People had a negative view of United States history as well as Columbus. This explains it all. This book should be distributed to all people learning history in our country. It should also be distributed to those professors who are so bent on the necessity for learning alternate views, as an alternate view. It is striking to me that Zinn can’t conceive of the idea of history coming from organic sources such as town records, eyewitnesses verified sources and such, rather than property owners and so-called industrial big business and political power interests. Sorry Mr. Zinn, most American history, movements, aren't solely about power.
It’s my prayer and hope that this book will begin to start a movement to clean up our history teaching, such as the 1776 project is doing, and others.
I hadn’t realized just how awful things really were in our schools and universities with this man's garbage. I thank this author so much for her work here.
The narration fit this book to a "T", she was fantastic!

Booker T. Washington fought his way out of slavery to become an educator, statesman, political shaper, and proponent of the "do-it-yourself" idea. In his autobiography, he describes his early life as a slave on a Virginia plantation, his steady rise during the Civil War, his struggle for education, his schooling at the Hampton Institute, and his years as founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which was devoted to helping minorities learn useful, marketable skills.

Such a prescient novel for our current time
Revisado: 09-11-20
This book really should be introduced in the public schools today, to counter some of the garbage and heat in race relations that’s being taught.
It also outlines really what a small majority of the white race were standing in the way of the Negro And how many whites really wanted to help the black man.
His love for his people, his love for the white race, for hard work and industry, for education, And to transmit that to those poor and uneducated people at the time are what made him such a great, great man.
I didn’t care that much for the narrator, a little woody and mechanical. Also it seemed like his voice was sped up.
