An unforgettable adventure that brings forth sparks of the present and the future
Revisado: 04-20-25
For moments, I felt this long story could have been shorter and more fast-paced. But I think that would not serve the supposed intention of the author — to make this more of an experience, not just a piece of literature. The characters will be hard to forget. The writing is so vivid and juicy that the reader tends to devour the story, no matter how long it is. The audiobook performance is perfect and highly recommended. I have become a fan of Robert McCammon and will tread the long roads of his remarkable stories. A solid 4.5.

Historia
We begin with a nameless young couple: a boy and a girl, teenagers in love. One day, she disappears . . . and her absence haunts him for the rest of his life. Thus begins a search for this lost love that takes the man into middle age and on a journey between the real world and an other world—a mysterious, perhaps imaginary, walled town where unicorns roam, where a Gatekeeper determines who can enter and who must remain behind, and where shadows become untethered from their selves.

How I missed Murakami
Revisado: 01-05-25
I last read Murakami in 2013 with his masterpiece 1Q84, which topped all the novels I have read for a more than a decade. That is why I had such high hopes for “The City…”. Vivid prose is still there. Magic realism is still there. But I felt some alienation. The writing is cold as winter. The Afterword explains the author’s mindset in some way. But still, it is as if I was left in the air, wanting for more in a not so good way.
It is still a solid 3.5 stars for me though.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

One of the best releases this year
Revisado: 11-16-24
This is an immensely engrossing reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, from the point of view of James. The retelling resounds to the present day. Both entertaining due to loads of action, and philosophical due to the excellent writing style where hidden gems of philosophy and political ideas are spread out for the reader, this is a great literary achievement. Dominic Hoffman has delivered an unforgettably impressive performance on audio, making him my personal favorite (also after listening to The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store).

Historia
Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

A no frills story of friendship in the world of video games
Revisado: 08-30-24
This could have been a 5-rating if it was a bit shorter. But after finishing the hundreds of pages, I can clearly say that Sam and Sadie have become so real, as real as the games they created. Such characters are quite difficult to forget.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

One of the best novels I have read
Revisado: 06-08-24
This is a solid novel about an important social issue written during a highly challenging time for women in history. At times light and witty, the writing always gets the significant message across. The characterization of the protagonist is even addictive at times. I find it really great that it has been turned into a limited series for the small screen. A trumph for a debut author, this is definitely a relevant story presented with the backdrop of science. The narrator is excellent. Overall, this is such a fantastic read.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

This is one unforgettable story that will most likely be put to life on film one day. The writing is masterful. It can be heartwarming and heart wrenching at the same time. The narrator is superb. It is quite a literary experience.

A well-written tale of horror
Revisado: 01-24-24
As my first Volpe literary experience, I found the book very entertaining. His writing flows flawlessly. I was, however, expecting a bigger punch in the storyline when I reached the later part. But overall, this work deserves the good reviews it is getting. I was just expecting a darker execution of a dark tale.
