الحب فطرةٌ في الإنسان تجعله طائعًا لمن يحبه، باذلًا كل جهده في سبيل إسعاده، متجنبًا كل ما يكرهه المحبوب؛ طمعًا في نيل رضاه. من هذا المنطلق كان حب الله من أصدق علامات الإيمان، وهو الدافع إلى حب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وتتجلى مظاهر هذا الحب لله ورسوله في سير المؤمن على نهج الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم واقتفاء أثره والتأسي به في كل شؤون حياته، على أن أسمى آيات الحب أن يجعل المؤمن هواه تبعًا لما جاء به النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، من هنا فهو يحب ما يحبه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ويكره ما يكرهه، ولكن المؤمن بحاجة....

ويشتمل الكتاب على جملة من الأخبار والأمثال والحكم والمواعظ والأشعار وغيرها. وقد سُمي بـ "العقد" لأن ابن عبد ربه قسّمه إلى أبواب أو كتب حمل كل منها حجر كريم، كالزبرجدة والمرجانة والياقوتة والجمانة واللؤلؤة، وغير ذلك مما تناول عقود الحسان الحقيقية.

هذا الكتاب هو من خير ما كتب الإمام ابن القّيم، وحسبنا به في تهذيب النفوس والأخلاق، والتأدب بآداب المتقين الصادقين، مما يدل أوضح دلالة على أنه كان من أولئك المهتدين الصادقين، الذين طابت نفوسهم بتقوى الله، فجاء الكتاب ليسدّ الحاجة الماسّة إليه في عصر المادة يجمع به إلى هذا النشاط المادي عند الناس، صفاء الأرواح، وتقوى النفوس، وتهذيب الأخلاق، حتى يجعل الله للعرب والمسلمين، فيما آتاهم من الأسباب المادية والغنى والثراء الحاضر والمنتظر في المستقبل، حياة عزيزة كريمة، آمنة في ظل الإسلام. والإمام ابن القيّم في كتابه هذا ينبه إلى أن كمال الإنسان إنما هو بالعلم النافع، والعمل الصالح، وهما الهدى
