Fascinating story connected to British imperialism. I liked the characters. The plot was a little confusing….probably a lack of Indian cultural understanding on my part.

I’ve always loved the Bess Crawford stories and this one, with some history about her family and the intriguing Simon, was helpful in understanding Bess. Can’t wait for the next book in the series. Okay

Good. My only issue is that, while the reader is very good, she has too much of a stiff upper lip, a bit pompous.
She should relax a little and carry-on.

I have listened to all the books on tape of Bess Crawford. The narator does a fantastic job.

For years, I have read Charles Todd’s series featuring Bess Crawford and always wondered about Simon’s background. Charles Todd, in this short story, or a prequel, tells us how Simon came to be in the army and the aid to Bess Crawford’s father. The short story and the explanation are both very satisfying. I.

Wow! What a great book! I’ve enjoyed 4 of the Bess Crawford books by Charles Todd and will continue with the series. A Hanging at Dawn sheds some light on her childhood and family history. A stand alone novel for sure if you haven’t read any of the others in the series.

Nice to have this back story for the series, and now I hope we see lots more of Simon (and Simon + Bess I hope!) in the next Bess Crawford mystery---we've been missing him. Love this series almost as much as the Inspector Ian Rutledge mysteries by the same authors. In both series, there are such moving portrayals of the tragic effects of WWI both during and after the war. The characters and settings come alive, and I'm always impatiently waiting for the next installment.

Once I discovered the Bess Crawford series it didn't take me long to read all the books in the series. Now I'm at the point where I await anxiously for the next book in the series to come out!! So I wad excited when I discovered this short story.
