Loyally accompanying a mysterious knife-wielding gentleman named Jack on his midnight rounds through the murky streets of London, good dog Snuff is busy helping his master collect the grisly ingredients needed for an unearthly rite that will take place not long after the death of the moon. But Snuff and his master are not alone. All manner of participants, both human and not, are gathering with their ancient tools and their animal familiars in preparation for the dread night. It is brave, devoted Snuff who must calculate the patterns of the Game and keep track of the Players—the witch, the mad monk, the vengeful vicar, the Count who sleeps by day, the Good Doctor and the hulking Experiment Man he fashioned from human body parts, and a wild-card American named Larry Talbot—all the while keeping Things at bay and staying a leap ahead of the Great Detective, who knows quite a bit more than he lets on.

Boldly original and wildly entertaining, A Night in the Lonesome October is a darkly sparkling gem, an amalgam of horror, humor, mystery, and fantasy. First published in 1993, it was Zelazny’s last book prior to his untimely death. Many consider it the best of the fantasy master’s novels. It has inspired many fans to read it every year in October, a chapter a day, and served as inspiration for Neil Gaiman’s brilliant story “Only the End of the World Again.”

This list encompasses the full spectrum of what horror can be—campfire-worthy tales, stomach-churning gore, and incisive social commentary. The classics are accounted for, but it also spotlights more recent titles, because that’s the nature of the genre—it is as perennial as it is ever-evolving, conjuring whatever frights most haunt our collective consciousness. Each title does have one thing in common: It makes for devilishly good listening. So cut the lights and press play—if you dare.

I absolutely adore this book, and I listen to it every October. It has become a cherished tradition.

I'm overjoyed that it's finally available on Audible. Before that, if you wanted in audiobook format, you had to hunt down a rare (and expensive) CD copy, read by Roger Zelazny himself. He did a fine job, but he was not a professional narrator, and the audio quality was pretty rough.

That's all over now -- we get a crisp, clear recording by a talented narrator. Matt Godfrey breathes life into the different characters, and he's easy to listen to.

I have zero complaints about this book, but I do have some complaints about the description, which I think gives far too much away. Part of what is so amazing about this book is the way that the mystery unfolds as the story progresses. As the reader/listener, you start out in the dark, and slowly learn about "the game," who is involved, and how everything works.

The thing is, it's a difficult book to describe without spoiling things. If I were to do it, I'd describe it by paraphrasing a passage from the book, thusly:

"A few times a century, on a night in the lonesome October, when the moon shines full on Halloween, the way may be opened for the return of the Elder Gods to Earth. Some people will assist in the opening of the way for them, while others will strive to keep the way closed. For ages, the closers have won... Often, just barely. And there are stories of a shadowy man, half mad, a killer, a wanderer -- and his dog -- who always show up to attempt the closing."

This book is a masterpiece, and this recording does it justice.

Finally on Audible!

I started reading Zelazny with This Immortal and Lord of Light in the sixties, but somehow I never got around to this little gem. I’m so glad I finally read it. The narrator did an excellent job with the character voices.

Great story, great narration!

I felt my imagination growing with every word. My minds eye actually creating the characters and all their adventures.

Loved the narration! Fabulously gave voices to the many peopled-creatured world. Segmented by the month of October instead of chapters.

Captured ambiance.

I could not stop listening. I enjoyed every minute of this book. The authors knowledge of the arcane is admirable.

Roger was my favorate author. I really miss his quirky style and expansive imagination. You know like an entire story from a talking dog's point of view. Lonesome October is grim and fun at the same time. Like someone digging up a grave; but that is not as important as watchdogs comparing teeth to see who is the boss. Or Larry the werewolf having a crush on Sherlock Holmes in drag. Where did he come up with this stuff.

Wasn't sure about Matt Godfrey at first but after awhile decided I quite like his narration. His character voices are subtle but effective.

Zelazny's last book.

Liked the authors original reading much better. The readers interpretation of voices got in the way.

So cleverly done! At no point does the author actually name which famous character he has incorporated, but as they speak, or more frequently, as they are described by their familiars, do you begin to place who they must be. The majority of the book is narrated by a dog and his conversations with other animals. Playing on literature high and low, movie monsters and Halloween superstitions, this great tale gets told. It's actually a goofy premise, like those werewolf meets Dracula movies, but he really makes it work. The characters are fully realized, their personalities and concerns critical to the story. Well done!

The narrator has a wide range of distinct voices to breathe life into the many characters, ranging from Eastern European, British, American, and just the right flourish to embody various animals, cats, canines, snakes, bats, rats. Very talented.

I'm marking this quirky gem a favorite.

What fun! A quirky approach that really works.

This is pretty different than anything I had read of Zelazny before, but I just loved it! an excellent Halloween addition to some of the classic books, and a real treat for classic Universal monster fans as well as Lovecraft addicts!

Great story, excellent performance by the reader!

Excellent story, well constructed and coherent, but revealing the bits and interactions in small, succulent bits as would a riveting detective novel.

The narrator does a masterful job of explaining and conveying the daily story details as though recording in a scientific notebook. The voices captured the essence of the story characters and I easily lost track of the single narrator. Just as it should be.

I heartily recommend.

Delightful and an easy read or listen
