This is a story of the first six months on the road full time and the humourous and enlightening things that happened written in a conversational tone and purposely not edited. This isn't a checklist of what you need to do, simply our experiences of daily life for the first six months. This includes all the unexpected repairs, issues, fun, and thoughts we had.
We started planning this 5 years before we ever stepped foot in an RV. What were we thinking? It sounded like a wonderful retirement plan. We even were planning on traveling with three other couples. As soon as I retired, we would sell our condo and travel to Alaska and then head to warmer climates for the winter (as we are from Michigan). A year before my retirement, yes, my husband retired before me, we purchased our RV. There was no way I would do this without a washer, dryer, and dishwasher. We weren’t doing this to save money, we were doing this for the experience.
We are also boaters and so we were used to living in smaller spaces than our 3000 sq foot condo.
I am a reader and a planner. I was truly looking forward to deciding where we go, how we get there, and what we do once we get there. We purchased the Milepost for Alaska travels and subscribed to many online resources. After all, if you plan what could possibly go wrong, especially in 2020? In February 2020 (just before COVID hit) we listed our condo, which sold in 2 days for a great cash offer. It was time to get rid of everything and start locking down the dates for our trip to Alaska. Hence, I booked and paid whenever required for all the parks from our departure in May to our return from Alaska and Canada on our way to Yuma, AZ for the winter.
I am adding we have now been on the road for 2 1/2 years and we still have our moments, there were many times we should have quit but didn't. We are not handy people, so we had to call a mobile repair person a few times (like when our toilet broke twice within a year), and took it to 4 service centers to have work done. It has been a wonderful experience and we will continue this adventure for a while longer provided we stay healthy and enjoy it.
