Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, holds a unique position amongst leaders of all the major religions in that he lived in the limelight of history something that cannot be said about those who preceded him. From his birth to death all important events have been meticulously recorded by his contemporaries. And yet, he remains the most contested historical personality to win the battle of the heart for the last 14 centuries. To the faithful Muslims, he is the best of mankind that has ever been created by God. To the faithful Christians, Muhammad, on the other hand, is the blasphemer of Christ. Not surprisingly, therefore, that there was not a period in European or American history since the Middle Ages in which Islam was generally discussed or thought about outside a framework created by passion, prejudice and political interests; Islam has been depicted as a Christian heresy, and its founder a false prophet. These days, Islam is even equated with terrorism and Fascism, and a new denigrating code word "Islamofascism" is becoming a staple of rhetoric among some western politicians. Fear-mongering has become the means of livelihood for many 'experts', working at the service of neo-imperialists. They tell us that if Islam is not defeated, Muslims will impose Shari'ah on the dhimmis, women would be forced to wear burqa or hijab and they would be subjected to all the worst kind of nightmares that they can imagine. How true are such allegations? There is no doubt that the campaign against Islam has gotten a tremendous boost after 9/11. Who can also forget the images of the "suicide bombers" in the Occupied Palestine? Then came the bombings in Bali and Madrid, and hostage crises in Moscow and Beslan, and the London Underground bombings - enough to sideline root cause analysis in favor of dealing with symptoms. A genuine dialogue of civilizations on an equal footing is necessary to find common grounds for peaceful coexistence between all the faiths. This dialogue can start with an understanding of the life and contribution of the Prophet of Islam. This work deals with some of the contentious issues relating to Muhammad that today's readers, Muslims and inquisitive non-Muslims alike, don't find in recent biographies. The issues discussed are: 1. How did Muhammad treat Christians and Jews of his time? 2. What caused so many of his early followers willing to sacrifice their lives for defense of Islam? 3. What characteristics define him, especially as a change agent par excellence? 4. How did his contemporaries – both his followers and foes – evaluate him? 5. How did he handle crisis? How did he behave with his adversaries, esp. the pagans of Arabia? 6. What proof is there that he was a Prophet of God? 7. Did he perform miracles like other Prophets that preceded him? 8. Was he prophesied by earlier Prophets? 9. Was he successful as a leader of the community by inculcating leadership qualities amongst those who represented him? What legacy did he leave behind? 10. How did his followers treat non-Muslims under the Islamic Caliphate? 11. Is there any truth to the claim of some detractors that he preached violence and terrorism and not peace? 12. Are there golden rules of Islam that he preached? What did he teach on social and moral virtues? 13. How did historians view his contribution? The author skillfully uses both traditional and contemporary scholarship about Islam to elucidate issues that plague the relationship between Muslims and the West. A reverent look at Muhammad, the book uses a topical approach towards the subject and the chapters are arranged in a way that will draw the reader's attention to the tenets of the religion while illuminating Muhammad's exemplary character and virtues. Islam and its Prophet have been much vilified in the West mostly due to ignorance. This book will go a long way towards correcting this situation.
