Manny Machado crushed a solo home run in the top of the 9th inning, Robert Suarez got the save and the Padres snapped their 6-game losing streak with a 2– win over the Braves in Atlanta.

Gavin Sheets hit a game-tying homer inning the 2nd inning off Chris Sale after the Braves jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Nick Pivetta courtesy of Ronald Acuna Jr.’s solo shot in the 1st inning.

Pivetta (5-2, 2.72 ERA) pitched 6 strong innings for San Diego, giving up just that 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 7 and walking 3. The right-handler matched scoreless innings with Sale, a former Cy Young Award winner who held the struggling Padres offense to 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6.

The Pads missed a chance to take the lead when Fernando Tatis Jr. was thrown out at home plate in the 6th inning after leading off with a double, and going to 3rd on Luis Arraez‘s sacrifice bunt.

Tatis took off for home on a ground ball to 3rd hit by Machado, but Austin Riley made a great throw to get Fernando.

Closet Suarez gave up 2 singles on the way to save number 16 after setup man Jason Adam (5-0) pitched 1/3 of an inning in the 8th to earn the wi.

Sheets has hit 3 homers in his last 2 games, driving in 6 runs.

Acuna Jr., the 2023 NL MVP, played his 1st game in almost a full calendar year after tearing his ACL last May.

The 3rd-place Padres (28-21) are 3 games behind the Dodgers and a game behind the Giants in the NL West.
