# How Ananse Outsmarted Tiger's Death Trap
Tiger, determined to eliminate his clever rival Ananse, devised a plan to fake his own death. He instructed Mrs. Tiger to announce his passing while he lay motionless in bed, waiting to ambush the unsuspecting spider when he came to pay respects. Dutifully, Mrs. Tiger began loudly lamenting, "Poor Tiger! Mr. Tiger is dead!"
The cautious Ananse, however, immediately suspected trickery. To verify the news, he methodically questioned various animals—Dog, Monkey, Goat, and others—asking if any had heard of Tiger being sick before his sudden death. When none confirmed any prior illness, Ananse's suspicions grew stronger.
Nevertheless, he decided to investigate personally and visited Tiger's house. There he found the weeping Mrs. Tiger and Tiger himself lying still in bed. Instead of approaching closely, the clever Ananse asked Mrs. Tiger, "Did he make the final groan? The dead make a big final groan." Unable to resist proving the completeness of his deception, Tiger promptly groaned loudly—definitively exposing his ruse. With his suspicions confirmed, Ananse immediately ran off laughing, having once again outwitted his powerful enemy without ever putting himself in danger.
