 Kate is a very independent young woman. She is the daughter of Earl Devonshire and lives and breathes training her horse, 'Dancer', for the Grand National Steeplechase that will be held in London in a few weeks. As a debutante, she endured two seasons in London to please her mother, but does not intend to have another, as she has no interest in getting married to any of the 'half wits' she met there.

Then the Earl of Ashwood comes on the scene. He is staying at a neighboring estate 'incognito' as Jason Meriwether. While out riding one morning, he sees Kate riding her horse, leaning over his neck, her golden hair flying out behind her. He is amazed that a woman can ride so well, but he has no intention of meeting up with her. He is not using his title while in the country, as he does not want to attract any attention to himself. He just wants some time away from London society and all the mothers with unmarried daughters.

However, fate has a way of changing the most well thought out plans.
