Outside, they could see the effects of the recent attack. A number of innocent Sotharian civilians lay dead upon the torchlit street, and accompanying them were several Aratanian refugees who had sought escape from a war that raged across the whole of Auropia. At the repulsive sight, it dawned upon Val that not even the sequestered forests of Sotharia were safe from the emperor’s vengeance, nor his desire to dominate the western world from the throne of Aratania.
Inside, a fire of molten flame burned within him, fostering a hate that, left unchecked, would evolve into full-blown madness. He understood what had to be done to put an end to the needless bloodshed that spread like a plague across the known world.

How was the only question that remained.

Val closed his fist tightly about the hilt of his sword, and the black gemstone encrusted within the pommel began to shimmer as though it were a living entity.

“All in due course.” Ashren’s voice appeared in Valengetrix’s mind as the spirit locked away within Starshatter’s hilt could sense the conflict brewing within him. “Focus on the present. Whatever artifact the emperor seeks, we must first determine its implications. Only then can we forge a plan to deal with the rot behind the throne of Aratania once and for all. For now, prepare yourself. I can taste the blood of our enemies on the night air, and their accursed souls are like wine to my palate.”
