Acerca de esta escucha

DEATH VALLEY EARNS ITS NAME when a terrorist threatens to unleash lethal radioactive toxins in America's most fragile national park.

Forensic geologists Cassie Oldfield and Walter Shaws embark upon a perilous mission to find and stop the terrorist. Mineral clues lead them deep into the desert, and the canyons, pushing them to their limits. The summer heat is brutal. The material they seek is hotter than the desert in August, and they are each vulnerable to its effects.

The geologists soon learn that they are up against more than human malice. The unstable atom—in the hands of an unstable man—is governed by Murphy's Law. Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

And it does.

I just finished Badlands. It will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. I just wanted to let you know that I won't delve into the story, as you can read the synopsis. What I do want to focus on is the plot, the concept, and the writing.
1) The plot
The author picked rad waste theft in the Death Valley area of California as the center of the plot and wove the role that geology can play in identifying who stole it, as well as where they could find it. And then the chase was on for the bad guy. The author weaves a riveting story of the scientific (geological) basis that leads to unraveling the diabolical plans of someone seeking revenge and a desire to wreak environmental and health havoc to make a point. The author is great at weaving science into the plot without losing the reader. Okay, seriously, I'm a science nerd and loved her ability to integrate science into the plot seamlessly. I read tons of mysteries, but this author is particularly skilled at incorporating science in a clear and understandable form for readers. I knew some about radiation but less about geology. Her ability to describe both made this not only an education but kept me, as a reader, involved.
2) The concept
Radioactive dirty bombs have been a concern for decades, especially for homeland security (USA). But the author takes it to the next level. The author weaves a story that shifts between the villain's personal vendetta and his environmental concerns about the storage of nuclear power plant waste. The author does not judge, or stand on a soapbox, just a darn good tale.
3) The writing
I have A LOT to say about the writing! This author is a master of weaving a complex mystery. Educating readers on the fine points of geology necessary to find the bad guy is a tough sell, but the author handles it beautifully. The author crafts a compelling story and a top-notch mystery, set against a backdrop of a disaster theme. This author is a master of word pictures. She makes a scene that is real to the reader, as well as the development of secondary characters for the reader to like or dislike. She is also great at building drama with each chapter. Makes the book (or listening<g>) a real page-turner.

This book is part of a series. Each book is 'stand-alone', so the reader doesn't have to worry about reading out of order. Yes, there are similar elements: geology, natural disaster (or manmade disaster). But they are well written and, though a lot of science/geology references, IMO the author does a great job of keeping the reader understanding what is going on.

The performer does a fantastic job of turning this book into a convincing audiobook. Her voice for Cassie is perfect. She really makes her real.

A real page-turner!

I absolutely loved this earth science-based mystery/thriller. As an earth scientist myself, I really appreciate the accuracy of all the geographic details of Nevada, the forensic geology, and the radioactive dangers. I was blown away by the excellent research by the author. I am totally addicted to this Forensic Geology series, and I will re-listen to this one in the future.

The storyline was very well constructed. It was a very rewarding listen with twists and a really intelligent heroine. The frequent peril for Cassie and Walter really kept me on the edge of my seat. Lots of thrills and chills! I also love the grit, determination, courage, logical minds, and the good sense of humor of Cassie and Walter. The book has occasional graphic violence, graphic descriptions of severe injuries, and vague sexual references, so I recommend it only for adults. I highly recommend this to adults who enjoy smart thrillers.

The narrator Nellie Scott did a wonderful job. She was very good at making all the character voices distinctive. She was excellent at pacing, enunciation, pronunciation, and accents. I especially love the accent of the FBI agent. I appreciate that the characters from California and Nevada all had accents that seemed accurate. I enjoyed Nellie Scott’s alto vocal tone, and she vividly brought the book to life with her vibrant performance.

I requested and received a free audio copy via the publisher, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam #FiresideAudio

This is a good one! Full of intrigue, suspense and drama. I enjoyed getting to know Cassie and Walter more in this one. They both have smarts, patience and integrity. I like how the adventure is woven through a suspenseful and informative storyline. It easily keeps my interest and I was surprised at where this tale went. That ending is always exciting and there is some feelings of “oooh” for a certain character. I almost wished him well.

I listened to this on audio. Nellie Scott does another wonderful job with the narration in here. I am excited for the next!

I’m a geology buff so this was right up my alley. Both pros and cons of technology run amok. Liked the characters. Narration clear and very listenable.

This is the first book I've read/listened to by Toni Dwiggins. I want to go back to book one to see what I missed, but this easily works as a standalone. The characters were easy to like. I was guessing the whole time. Looking forward to the next book.

Nellie Scott is a great narrator. She voiced male and female characters perfectly.
