Chace Ogden and the Golden Golem is a fun start to the MYTH Squad series. The characters are relatable and make sense for the ages that they are supposed to be. Fans of Rick Riordan's YA book series (Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, etc) or the TV show The Librarians will enjoy this take on magic hidden in the modern world and the quest to keep the public safe from forces outside their understanding. The narration is well done and really helps convey the emotion of the moment. Highly recommended for YA Fantasy fans.

I started reading Teen/YA books/stories by accident a couple of years ago and now I read them by design. Chace Ogden and the Golden Golem is the first of Trevor Darby’s books I’ve read/listened to – in this case I listened to the audiobook version and thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn’t hard to identify with Chace – Afterall every adult was a seventh grader at one in their life and for most of us I’m sure it was an awkward time. Of course, once you introduce the magic side of the story it gets even more uncomfortable for Chace. Overall, this was an enjoyable story and I’m sure Michael Wetherbee’s narration played a significant part in the enjoyment. I’m looking forward to seeing how well he narrates the second story in this series. I received a review copy of the audiobook from the author and chose to provide this review.

Very entertaining story!

My 10 year old son helped me listen to this book and he absolutely loved it! He already wants book two. This story is about Chace Ogden who is starting middle school but the problem is that he is seeing mythical creatures that shouldn't really exsist.... Can he survive these mythical creatures and navigate middle school without being labeled as an odd ball or worse? The adventure is just beginning in this very entertaining new series and really leaves you wanting to read the next book.

Parents: This book about clean and great for all ages but I do think it is geared for 3rd grade through middle school.

4.5 stars

I read this 2 years ago but decided to listen to the audiobook since I enjoyed the audiobook for books 2 and 3. I also wanted to listen to book 4, but decided it had been long enough that I wanted to start all over from the beginning. I think the narrator, Michael Wetherbee, is perfect for this series, and it added to my enjoyment of the story. I would say this book is geared to 3rd-6th grade, but it is something older readers would enjoy as well. I also think it's something that the family might enjoy listening to on a road trip.

I've since read many books by this author, but this was my first book by him and yes, this book is definitely geared towards middle school kids. And yet, I found it delightful and a good intro to fantasy for younger people. I really enjoyed the relationship Chace had with his grandfather, as well as with his mom and brother (even though there wasn't as much in this book). But what I really liked was his relationship with his close friends (Taz in particular) and his interactions with Raven. His teacher was quite creepy and mean, and while this book was not exactly about character development, it was a nice solid fantasy novel, good for younger readers. Despite the target audience, I ended up really enjoying it both times and will reread the entire series. Because, after all, we can't leave Raven hanging. ;-)

My 2nd time through, just as enjoyable as the 1st

Teenage boy, magic, first day of school what could possibly go wrong. Give it a listen to find out. You will laugh cry and be throughly amazed at the trouble this boy is able to get into.

Excellent

Highly recommended - definitely a book for young adults and young at heart who enjoy a clean fantasy with an unlikely hero. Chace starts a new year at a new school with his best buddies and the gift of a dragon crafted bracelet.

Spoiler alert!
Chace started hearing voices, so distracting that he caused the friends to loose their online video game. Pop guessed there were problems, that the time was nearing, that the world was threatened by evil and that Chace was needed to play the role destined by his blood line. So Chace's pop gave him the bracelet to wear, a treasured heirloom, that unknown to Chace would unlock magical abilities.

In true middle school manner, the friends disperse to different streamed classes. In the world history class, Chace takes an instant dislike to the grumpy and creepy teacher, Mr Uwyn. The dislike seems mutual. To Chace's delight, a new student arriving late stands up to Mr grumpy Uwyn, her name is Raven. Chace is impressed!

Lots of fun, the trials and tribulations of learning to be a hero supported by good friends and a feisty Raven. This ends a minor cliff hanger. I am committed to finding out what happens next in the Quest for Raven

Chase discovers his destiny - great fun

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author and I would listen to another. I could see my son enjoying this when he gets old enough. I would agree this is appropriate for middle grade kids.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Michael Wetherbee ) and I would listen to another. He does well narrating this story. His voices are natural and he brings a touch of personality to the characters.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing. There were some editing mistakes but not really disruptive.

Chace Ogden and the Golden Golem, my second read/listen from author Trevor Darby. An author that's still new, to me, in the 3-hour 56-minute/144-page the story-line quickly gets better & better drawing the reader deeper & deeper. Narrator Michael Wetherbee’s narration adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment. I have to admit to speeding up the playback the story was so enthralling. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I’ll be reading more from this author and in this series, in fact next up is Chace Ogden and the Quest for Raven: MYTH Squad, Book 2. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

A well-written story from a good author

Chace is introduced to a whole new world... creatures that shouldn't exist... magic... danger... This is a great first book in a new series. It's aimed at the middle grade audience, but anyone can enjoy it. as a quick read.

I'm looking forward to seeing where Trevor Darby takes this series.

This was the first narration by Michael Wetherbee that I have listened to, and it won't be the last.
