Acerca de esta escucha

How do you kill a god, a Greek god, one of the Ancients? The professor had never been asked that before. Jim Burges and his wife, Sally, eagerly awaited the answer. Jim claimed to have a murderous god stalking him, and he needed to know. The professor swallowed hard before proceeding. He knew they weren’t going to like his response.

I love a good fantasy but this one fell a bit short for me. There were so many instances where what the characters did made absolutely no sense. Even in fantasy, probably more so in fantasy, the world has to make sense.

SPOILERS AHEAD

A "god", your father, wants you to help him take over the world and you decide that he won't find you in your home town? The same home town where he impregnated your mother and watched you grow up? You tell your friend, the police chief, that you think your "father" is behind a string of murders and the cop only asks your "fathers" name? He doesn't ask you to describe him or give details on the last time you saw hi? Your father, the "god", has broken into your house and your wife chooses not to tell you until the morning? Your "brother" runs away from you and instead of running to catch him (both of you have similar physical freakiness,) you get into a car and of course, lose him when he runs where cars can't go?

There were a lot of sequences like this that made no sense to me.

The narrator had a good voice but he didn't make his characters distinct. I was able to follow what was going on but that was more the written word than the spoken word.

I wanted to like this listen but it fell short.

I wanted to like it

with that being said that in no way influences my review. i thought the story was good. not great. it plays almost like a detective novel with some fantasy or mythology bundled in. I did like it, i think i would have liked it more if the narrator was better. it seems to be my biggest gripe lately. he was almost monotone, no emotion or ability to differentiate between who was speaking unless he points it out.

I got this book for free in turn for a review.

Good story based on Greek mythology. The story flows well and the narration is good.

A love story with a mythical twist. Drama, thriller, action all rolled into one well done story.

I had to stop listening after an hour because I couldn't take how bad the narration was. I think the book would be better if it was not read in such a deadpan monotone.

Could not get past the bad narration.

It's another book hard for me to rate... On the one hand, the premise was good: a Greek god trying to take over the world with the help of his (unwilling) kids... And one of those kids trying to oppose and kill him to save the human world... Sounded great - a suspenceful thriller with Greek mythology in the mix, what do you want more, right?
Well, the execution somehow fell flat for me. The Greek god, as bad as he was countless times said to be, did not feel as menacing as he could have (even though he did kill several people in a merciless manner), the run for life didn't radiate the rush and threat and scare it should have (would you admire the landcapes while running away into hiding?) and even the fight scenes did not feel action-packed somehow... It's difficult for me to explain why that was so but maybe it's the writing style that was the reason... Short sentences, with not too many descriptive adjectives, sounded kind of rough, as if it was the first draft, the base for the story that was supposed to be developed later on... As it is the book definitely lacks depth, both plot and characterwise, at least it does for me.

The narration was OK, I liked what Mr Campbell did with the text he was given. The fact that there was not much of voice differentiation did not bother me as it was obvious who was speaking anyway. And the pace of his reading was good, too. I would like, however, to listen to another book in his interpretation to decide how good a narrator he really is.

This was an interesting and engaging, if short, story. The narration was well done and kept me engaged in the story. The blending of the Greek pantheon with a modern thriller story. All in all, it is definitely worth checking out.

short but really good

So, I wanted to like this book. I really did. Greek gods. Mysteries. Modern day. Unfortunately, the description and blurb are more exciting than the book itself.
The characters were flat and just accepted strange things as believable with no questions. Everyone acts like it's normal and reasonable that a god is running around and killing people. The dialogue was boring and repetitive. A couple times, I actually wondered if my app had errored because the dialogue was so familiar. The characters were similarly flat. The women liked shopping and baking. The men all played golf. And of course the main character was amazing at everything. Passed the bar exam after studying for only 30 minutes. We're told this at least four times.
The narrator was unbelievably slow and read everything in the same flat voice. It was a rough slog. I was glad it was only four hours long.
I was given this book for free at my request in exchange for a fair review.

Don't know how but it's boring

A good premise.I wanted to like it.I found the writing oddly lacking and stilted. There was no personality behind the characters. Narration by Tom Campbell followed the writing. It was oddly paced and halting. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
