Acerca de esta escucha

A novel written by the author H. Rider Haggard, the author of King Solomon's Mines and She. This book was first printed in 1889.

The story is set in the Ptolemaic era of ancient Egyptian history and revolves around the survival of a dynasty bloodline protected by the priesthood of Isis. The main character, Harmachis (the living descendant of this bloodline), is charged by the priesthood with overthrowing the supposed impostor - Cleopatra - driving out the Romans, and restoring Egypt to its golden era.

Reseñas editoriales

Henry Rider Haggard's wildly imaginative novels are very much a product of his fin de siècle era, laden with Victorian exoticism and concepts of adventure. Haggard's fictional characters have been referenced by Sigmund Freud and have inspired modern movie heroes like "Indiana Jones". Due to its somewhat stiff language (many "thou's" and "thee's), supposedly "transcribed" from papyrus scrolls, Cleopatra hasn't been as popular over the years as Haggard's novels She and King Solomon's Mines, but Brian Troxell's skilled performance manages to soften the audiobook's formal diction. The novel's eponymous heroine is just as compelling a character as Ayesha, a.k.a. "She-who-must-be-obeyed" in She.

Great summer read. Once you wade in a few chapters, you’ll be enthralled with the story and characters.

I felt the atmosphere of Ancient Egypt right at the beginning, and then I followed the characters through the whirlwind of their feelings and emotions. Overall the book is written simple and tasteful, it has a nice mixture of facts and fiction. The reader did a marvelous job presenting the book in audio form.

Great novel!

This book wasn't what I thought to be at first but it was amazing! Definitely worthy checking out. It takes about 2 chapters to get into it but after that I couldn't put it down!

Greatly surprised me!

This is what happens when a white guy who doesn’t like women decides to be clever and write a biography about a woman but it’s not about her at all it’s about some fanciful (male) rightful king of Egypt who narrates his fake life in rebellion against the alleged subject, Cleopatra. How is this allowed to be called a Biography? I dunno. It’s a mess.

Ugh.
