Sebastien de Castell creates the best characters. They have depth and heart and come alive when narrated by Joe Jameson. This story was much darker with more occult elements than the Greatcoats series, but no less enjoyable. And Estevar has quickly become one of my all-time favorite Greatcoats, after this and a short story de Castell wrote of him. If you merely miss Falcio and the other Greatcoats, this may not be the best story to satiate that longing. But if you miss the storytelling and narration that only de Castell and Jameson can deliver, this book is exactly what is missing in your life.

Masterful and dark

This was an awfully dark story about a badly injured man facing depravity and murders and demons in a place that should have been quiet and safe. I liked the bluster and confidence of the greatcoat in the face of so many opponents, and his young piccolo’s presence added a sense of mystery and learning. Imperious the mule was great and I appreciated the care given to him. But, yeah…. demons torturing, killing, eating and then regurgitating a group of monks is not something I would like to hear about. I did a fair amount of fast forwarding or just turning my attention elsewhere as I got through scenes I didn’t want to hear. (Even though it was read by one of my favorite narrators.)

At the very least the best since his first few. His. World, creation and political organization has developed a dramatically improved coherence. I enjoyed his first books very much. Falcio and his friends are terrifically, enjoyable heroes, but there was. A little bit of a clumsy structure inherent in those first books that is not uncommon for early writers, even those with obvious talent and good works to come from them.

This one feels like it brings all of the elements of his unique fantasy and political worldview together in a way that is both tremendously satisfying and helps to elaborate some of the unintended holes in his previous works.

I wholeheartedly endorse this work, and it fills me within an anticipation for the sequence that seems likely to follow in its footsteps.. Furthermore, it is a good length, for de Castel.. Not too much nor too little for him to cover in a single tone.

My singular dissatisfaction… Or perhaps, accurately… Frustration in the early books in which the rapier – armed magistrates constantly found themselves painted against the more traditionally, armed and armored knights felt more organically woven in this book, perhaps, as there was less direct sword play between the two incompatible types of weapons, and perhaps as well, because the book was less about the inherent violence of the world of Tridtia, and more about its… Historical and… Spiritual (for lack of a better adjective). But it does seem to me that there is more room now on the other side of this work to integrate the martial choices that lend the stories of the great cloaks their necessary, and fun, swashbuckling elements.

In some: I highly recommend this work, and if you’ve not read the first several in his series, I recommend them as well. In fact, I intend to go back and read them again to see if I can find a more comfortable blend between the joy that I have found in this work and the joyful but discordant aspects of his initial books. I hardly recommend them all, though this most recent one is far away, the deepest and best written of them.

Easily the very best of de Castell’s great coat books.

This is a wonderful book about a wounded Greatcoat and his bodyguard mule named Imperious. They are investigating the murder of a high priest at the holiest of islands. Prior to the murder all the gods worshipped at the island have been killed and chaos has broken out among the monks inhabiting the monastery. The book takes place over only three days and has only one POV so there are no complicating side plots.
Although there is almost constant action, the discussion of splintering of faith into factions and the chaos that erupts when this happens and the felt need to quickly create new gods even when this causes pain and disaster makes for thoughtful reflection.
Regardless, theology and philosophy aside, the best part of the book is the mule.

I love the combination of Joe Jameson and this author. I have pretty much every legit adult fanatsy series and this one is one of my favorites.

What a good story! I admit the story started really slow, but like all good stories, you have to stick with it and watch it build. Estervar Boros is no Falcio Val Mond. Thank goodness he is not, he is his own Greatcoat! I hope Sebastian De Castle will continue with more stories of the Greatcoat’s!!

Sebastien de Castell's Greatcoats series is among my favorites. It is a fun and humorous swashbuckler of a tale, and I am excited to listen to the next series The Court of Shadows. Crucible of Chaos is a prequel to that series, and it is just as fun as the books before it. Joe Jameson's narration as always is perfect for this series,

Overall, another great addition to the Greatcoats world. Well worth the credit.
