Stephen King
The number-one national best seller for Stephen King's rabid fans, Cujo "hits the jugular" (The New York Times) with the story of a friendly Saint Bernard that is bitten by a sick bat. Get ready to meet the most hideous menace ever to savage the flesh and devour the mind.
Cujo is a 200-pound Saint Bernard, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. One day Cujo chases a rabbit into a cave inhabited by sick bats. What happens to Cujo, how he becomes a horrifying vortex inescapably drawing in all the people around him, makes for one of the most heart-stopping novels Stephen King has ever written.
"A genuine page-turner that grabs you and holds you and won't let go" (Chattanooga Times), Cujo will forever change how you view man's best friend.

That being said. The book itself does some things right. The fact that you get to see some of the story from Cujo's point of view. This book calls to memory the wave of panic that swept through small towns during Rabies out breaks and reminds me of my own experience with a Rabid animal as a child. The fact that it's a very grounded and self contained book only adds to the claustrophobia of the story. It's a wonderfully tense ride and tragic in so many ways. There are so many instances when the protagonist is SO CLOSE to being saved and then something just HAPPENS to happen to keep that safety at bay. I feel this is something King has always done very well, building that sense of hopelessness and resignation of doom. It's very clear you're not going to get a happy ending, that's not King's style. So if you're sensitive to children or animals being in harms way this is not the book for you. You HAVE to go into it expecting there to be tragedy and pain. I definitely think the book is WORLDS different and better than the movie, if only because it retains all it's nuance that was forsaken for the sake of cheap scares in the film. It was fun to compare the two as the movie had made such an impression on me as a child. You will never look at a St. Bernard the same way again but the wonderful thing about the book is you get a sense of understanding and sympathy for Cujo that you just can't get in the movie because the movie doesn't bother to add that inner thought process. Cujo's journey into Rabies madness was probably the saddest part of the story though as a mother the idea of my child being in a situation like this is horrifying. I think following Cujo's reasoning and understanding the reasons for his attacks makes it hard to see him as a monster like he was portrayed in the film. The entire time he's just trying to be a good boy and it's heart breaking. But a very interesting choice. Cujo's arc alone is worth the read. Though i recommend getting a hard copy instead of listening to this particular recording. Bless the Narrator but she's better suited for something more whimsical or child aimed than a King novel.
Anxiety inducing but sadly dated
