Sedaris proves that family memoir humor doesn't have to have a lowest-common-denominator appeal. The frustrating thing is you don't know whether to laugh with him or cry for him. Either way, it's a scream. His work reveals an extremely sharp mind and prodigious, penetrating insight.

Here, he's live at Carnegie Hall and just when his modest voice seems to get swallowed up in the environment, he delivers a punch line with such precision and clarity that the audience can't help but fall hard for him.. It's clear Sedaris writes and speaks as much for his own amusement as for ours, and that makes him even more likeable as a performer. Very funny stuff from a very funny, contemporary humorist whose pathetic tales have inspired a very delightful Audible Select.

Yes, it's that good. Perhaps not to everyone's taste, but I have indeed acquired a taste for Mr Sedaris' readings. Got this title as a sample track when I first downloaded the Audible app some years ago on my first Android phone... Had me hook, line and sinker. Went on to purchase the entire audio book.

David is at his best when he is reading to a live audience, and the stories feel at their best when the audience truly truly gets him (in other titles you can sense the subtle beauty in his poignant humour fly right over some of the audience memebers' heads... But not this one). This reading at Carnegie Hall sounded like a pleasure for David to perform, and a pleasure for the audience themselves to be there... The best kind. And it translates well while listening in your living room/bed room/commute/gym, just as well.
