Die einäugige Hündin Narbe kann sich nicht vorstellen, dass eine wie sie jemals geliebt werden könnte. Doch dann verirrt sich der sanfte Hund Max zu der Müllkippe, auf der Narbe lebt. Er erzählt ihr von seinem wunderschönen Zuhause bei den Menschen, und in der Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben begleitet Narbe den Fremden auf die gefährliche Heimreise.

Unterwegs wird Max von Alpträumen geplagt, in denen die beiden ein Liebespaar sind und von einem Menschen getötet werden. Aber sind es wirklich Alpträume oder vielmehr Erinnerungen? Narbe wehrt sich anfangs dagegen, dass es ihr Schicksal sein soll, Max zu lieben. Doch kaum beginnt sie zaghaft, an das Gute zu glauben, taucht der Mensch aus den Träumen auf...

The first two books I listened to by David Safier were Miss Merkel and Mieses Karma which I both very much enjoyed. So, I was expecting some humor and light hearted philosophizing. But this story is a roller coaster ride of anxiety and grim events. And the anthropomorphism of human emotions on canine characters is a soap opera that has no relation to actual dog behavior. Dogs don’t weep over not being able to ‘have children’. I hung in there for what other reviewers promised as the ‘happy ending’. Okay the author cheats a bit to pull it off in last few minutes, but it’s truly not worth slogging through a depressing story to get to a two minute feel good ending. Seriously, argh, I want those hours of my life back.
