يستهل يوسف إدريس كتابه بالحديث عن مميزات القارة الصفراء ثمَّ يتبع ذلك بوصف جولاته ومشاهداته في اليابان متحدثًا عن أحداث مختلفة مثل انتحار كاتب اليابان الأول في فترة ما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية، وعن تعدّد الآلهة هناك حتى لتبدو لك المدينة وكأنّها ملونة ومزركشة.

كما يتحدَّث بالتفصيل عن ألمانيا بدءًا بوصف طباع الشعب الألماني وليس انتهاءً بالحديث عن ثورتهم الصناعية وقيامهم بعد هزيمة الحرب العالمية الثانية.

بعد الانتهاء من هذا الكتاب ستتأكّد بأنَّ يوسف إدريس ليس مجرّد كاتب أو قاصًّا من الدرجة الأولى بل هو مفكّر في داخله رحّالة يتوق للحرية.
