When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a house in London, he soon discovers some strange and shocking things about his new client. And then some strange things start happening back in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby, a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the 'Master' and his imminent arrival.

First published in 1897, Dracula is an epistolary novel, meaning that the narrative is related through letters, diary entries and newspaper articles. The story is brought to life in this Audible production by a group of actors that you might recognise from TV and film: Himesh Patel (Yesterday), Patricia Allison (Sex Education), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Theo James (Divergent series) and Jason Watkins (The Crown).

There are so many popularizations of this story, but none does any justice to the novel itself.

The plot moves smoothly and effectively. The drama is keen and chilling. The characters are well-developed.

I have had no idea until now about the movements across the countries by the major characters and what drove them to the moves. I don’t recall this in shows and movies. And it’s yet another reason why the novel excels.

I confess to being spooked many times during the course of this story. Really scared. And that was cool!

The narration by several players reading the main parts is well conceived and achieved.

What can I say? "Dracula" is one of those classic stories that one should read at least once in one's lifetime. I enjoyed it immensly when I was 20. Now, almost three decades later I appreciate it even more than the first time I read it. Some people complain that it's repetitive and it drags towards the end. Well, I don't mind that at all.
All in all, it's a "bloody" good read :) and a stellar performance by the whole cast.

I was so excited to listen to this and it hurts to say that I almost gave up on it. The first half was pretty boring as far as the storyline goes for me. It did get better but I don’t know that I would read or listen again. The performance from the actors was phenomenal. They were amazing.

I was expecting more…

The folks who produced this recording, and the voice actors who brought Stoker’s work to life, did the most superb job. I almost wish I could thank them personally for their attention to their work.

I'm ashamed to say that while I've read many stories about vampires, I have only just finished this classic. While the pacing dips at certain points, the gothic horror and sense of dread that stems from the titular count is felt throughout.

A classic that shall live forever
